Meriam Ibrahim & Husband Regain Freedom From Detention After US Intervention
June 24, 2014 – Meriam Ibrahim & Husband Released From Sudanese Police Detention After US Intervention
After spending close to 24 hours in detention, Meriam and her hubby, Daniel Wani have been released.
Sudanese government said she was detained over a travel document.
Ibrahim, was reportedly re-arrested at Khartoum Airport, while attempting to leave Sudan on a Tuesday flight out of the country. She was attempting to travel to an undisclosed location, believed to be somewhere in the U.S. with her family.
With the 27 year old woman’s re-arrest making headlines around the world, the Sudanese may have had a change of heart, for the second time, within 24 hours.
Sudanese officials said that Ibrahim was “not under arrest,” but only detained, and has since been released, according to U.S. State Department Deputy Spokeswoman, Marie Harf. “They are safe and secure,” said Harf, who quoted Sudanese government officials regarding the temporary detention of Ibrahim and her family.
