Nigerian Movie star on trial for murder

A popular film star in the northern part of the country, Nura Imam, has been remanded in prison custody over the alleged murder of a son he had with a school mate in Kano.

Imam, who was a student of a college of education, was said to have recently impregnated a school mate.

The prosecutor, Tijjani Ibrahim, read the charges levied against Imam, saying that
he committed an offence punishable under section 222 of the penal code

According to him; the crime is a capital offence which should be handled by a High Court.

Magistrate Umma Kurawa ordered that Imam should be kept in prison custody
and adjourned the case till April 2, 2012.

The accused, who denied the charges, said that he was framed up in the murder scandal.

Imam said he accepted the pregnancy earlier and there was no reason for him to kill the child after he was born.

He said that he was told about the pregnancy by the girl’s parents and he was fully aware of it until she put to bed when she called and informed him that the child was ill.

“When I went to see them, she brought out the baby to me and returned home and
came back after few minutes when the baby started crying,” he said. “The baby was said to have died shortly after I left and they accused me of killing the baby and later, I was summoned to the court.” (daily times)
