We humans often believe that our fear of making mistakes comes from our  fear of failure. While this may be true, we can narrow it down even further by saying we fear the negative effects of making a mistake.

We fear things like embarrassment and money loss. Staying where you’re at is the safe and comfortable option. It’s easy to make the safe decision but it doesn’t always lead you in the direction of your dreams. To change your current situation, you must be willing to make a change.

You have to get a little uncomfortable.

Here are 6 ways to overcome your fear of making mistakes so you can move onto bigger and better things.

1. Change the way you think of failure

When we fail, we typically give up and never look back. Failure is tough to face! What you should be doing instead is look at failure as an opportunity to learn. Don’t look at it as an ending but rather an opportunity to grow. Change the way you think about failure. Instead of viewing it as a negative, have a positive outlook. Now that you know what doesn’t work, you can try it again and find out what does work.

2. Find an accountability partner

An accountability partner is someone you can trust to help you achieve your goals. They’re your cheerleader along the way and they make sure you don’t chicken out when fear tries to take over. They support you and hold you to your goals. When looking for an accountability partner, choose someone who’s familiar with what you’re trying to achieve, someone who’s ahead of you in the journey but not too far ahead, and someone who you admire. Meet with them regularly to discuss where you’re at now, where you want to be, and how to get there.

3. Celebrate the small victories

Chances are you tend to focus on every single struggle and failure you face and only celebrate the big wins. Many of us do that. Remember, every small victory is a step leading to your big goals. Celebrating these small achievements will motivate you and keep you going! Here’s what you need to do. Break your large goal into smaller chunks so that they’re less overwhelming. Every time you accomplish one of those small goals, act as if you just achieved your big goal.

4. Understand why you’re afraid

We already determined that your fear actually comes from the negative things that accompany failure. For instance, you may have a fear of losing a secure job, being embarrassed or losing money. All of these are all real and understandable fears. Whenever faced with a new opportunity, ask yourself what’s the worst that could happen and also ask yourself what’s the BEST thing that could happen. How will you feel once that goal is reached? Do the benefits of going after your dreams outweigh the negatives? Once you understand why you’re afraid, you can work around that fear and come up with a solution.

5. Let things fall into place

Sometimes we go through difficult times in life for a reason. We like to believe that these moments are strategically put into our lives to push us toward our big goals, regardless of fear. Instead of putting all of your energy into avoiding these difficult times, embrace them and know that something bigger is in store for you. Rest assured that your moment is coming! We’re not saying to sit back and let life just happen. Continue to push forward but with a positive attitude, knowing that everything will work out in the end.

6. Face fear head on

Say yes to the opportunities that frighten you most. Take chances and break out of your comfort zone. By doing so you’ll learn more about yourself, feel more comfortable about making changes in your life, care less about what others think of you, grow as a person, and learn more than you ever possibly could in a book. Just start doing things! Remember that the more you fail, the more you succeed.

Failure will happen no matter what but how you react to it says a lot about you as a person and where you’re headed in life. You basically have two options: The fear can either hold you back from even trying to do those scary things or it can propel you forward.
