Bus Accident: 4 Killed, 11 Injured At Aiyetoro Axis Of Lagos Ibadan Expressway
Four Fatalities and 11 Injuries in Foton Bus Accident on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway
In a distressing turn of events, a solitary accident involving a Foton bus led to the unfortunate death of four individuals, while another 11 people suffered injuries of varying severity. The fatal mishap occurred along the Lagos-Ibadan expressway, specifically at the Aiyetoro axis.
The official confirmation of the incident was provided by the Public Relations Officer for Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps, Mr. Babatunde Akinbiyi. Speaking to journalists in Abeokuta on Sunday, Akinbiyi detailed the circumstances of the unfortunate accident, painting a grim picture of the day’s events.
The tragic incident transpired at precisely 9:59 am on Sunday. The accident affected a total of 15 individuals, comprising a group of three men and a larger group of 12 women, all of whom were passengers in the ill-fated bus.
Breaking down the casualties, Akinbiyi conveyed that of the injured, 11 were women, who suffered injuries that ranged from minor to severe. The deceased, on the other hand, consisted of three men and one woman, each of whom lost their lives in the course of this disastrous event.
Elucidating on the circumstances that led to the accident, Akinbiyi explained that the commercial bus was led astray and into a ditch following a tyre burst while the bus was in motion. The sudden deflation of the tyre caused the bus to lose control and ultimately somersault into the ditch, resulting in the tragic outcome.
He shared the eyewitness account, which revealed that “the bus, bearing the license plate number AGL 989 YA, was en route from Ibadan, heading towards Lagos. However, it suffered a tyre burst on the driver’s side as it was cruising along the Ayetoro axis on the expressway. This unfortunate event caused the bus to lose control and somersault into a ditch.”
Providing further information on the aftermath of the accident, Akinbiyi noted that the bodies of the deceased were moved to the Idera morgue in Sagamu. At the same time, those injured in the incident were transported to Famobis Hospital, Mowe, where they received necessary medical attention.
In the face of such a tragic incident, Akinbiyi took the opportunity to impart advice to other drivers on the road. He stressed the importance of avoiding excessive speed and discouraged the use of ‘tokunbo’ (used) tyres which can often be unreliable. He also reiterated the need for all drivers to adhere to basic traffic rules and regulations in order to prevent such unfortunate incidents in the future.
