Why My Creativity Soared After Returning to Nigeria from Canada
Hello, everyone! Victoria here, the author of NG. If you’ve been following our blog, you’ll know that my family and I have recently taken the plunge to return home to Nigeria from Canada. In this post, I’m excited to share a somewhat unexpected but profoundly impactful aspect of this journey: an incredible surge in my creativity. You won’t believe it—I’ve felt more creatively alive in these two weeks back in Nigeria than I did in years while living in Canada.
The Crushing Weight of High Costs in Canada
Living in Canada comes with its set of challenges. To start, the cost of living is staggering. I used to pay a whopping $3,500 per month in bills alone (rent included). To sustain that lifestyle, I had to work exceedingly hard, which left me stressed and exhausted by the end of each day. As a result, my creativity was squashed under the weight of these financial burdens.
The Sunshine Factor
It might sound trivial, but the lack of adequate sunshine in Canada significantly impacted my well-being. Constant cold and gray skies not only affected my mood but also seemed to freeze my creative juices. On the flip side, Nigeria’s vibrant sun seems to have thawed my imagination, giving wings to my creative thoughts.
The Educational Struggle
For my children, the educational system in Canada turned out to be less than ideal. They faced learning difficulties that weren’t being addressed adequately. Here in Nigeria, I’ve been able to hire extra teachers for them, thanks to the lower cost of living. Their improved educational experience has lifted a weight off my shoulders, freeing me to focus on my creative endeavors.
A Better Standard of Living in Nigeria
Yes, you read that right! While Canada is often glorified for its high standard of living, it’s crucial to examine what that means. High standards often mean high costs—from groceries to clothing and everything in between. In Nigeria, I own my mansion, reducing my monthly bills to virtually nothing in comparison. The reduced financial burden has a direct, positive impact on my mental space, allowing my creativity to flourish.
The Influence of Nigerian Culture
We cannot overlook the cultural richness that Nigeria offers—a kaleidoscope of languages, traditions, and artistic expressions. This rich tapestry provides an endless source of inspiration. Whether it’s the colorful fabrics of the local markets, the captivating rhythms of Afrobeats, or the intricate designs of traditional Naija attire, Nigeria fuels my creativity in ways that the Canadian landscape never did.
Community and Support
Last but certainly not least, being surrounded by family and a supportive community has enriched my life in countless ways. In Nigeria, it’s easier to have a work-life balance, which means I can spend more quality time with loved ones. This sense of community belonging is not just fulfilling; it’s creatively stimulating.
My Final Thoughts!.
Moving back to Nigeria has been an eye-opener in many ways. While the journey came with its own set of challenges and adjustments, the incredible boost in my creative output is a reward I hadn’t anticipated but deeply cherish.
To everyone contemplating a move, either within your country or internationally, remember that sometimes, a change in your physical location could be the key to unlocking a more creative, fulfilling, and enriched life.
Until next time, stay creative, stay inspired!
