Behind Closed Doors: ECOWAS’ Shocking Stand Against Niger’s Recent Military Coup

It’s not a scene from a Hollywood drama but real-time political suspense in West Africa! ECOWAS (Economic Community of West African States) has just dropped a major bombshell that has everyone on the edge of their seats.

In an urgent, oh-so-tense meeting held in Nigeria’s capital, Abuja, the proverbial gavel was slammed. ECOWAS President, the charming and ever-so-decisive Omar Alieu Touray, announced they’re deploying their standby force to restore order in the Niger Republic. For those not in the know, think of it like sending in the Avengers – it’s a big deal!

Hold onto your hats because the gossip mill was swirling at the recent ECOWAS Extraordinary meeting. Everyone who is anyone in the West African political scene was there, and the tension? Palpable. What has many tongues wagging is ECOWAS’s clear call out for the African Union and other partners to back their decision. We’re seeing some serious high-school cliques vibes, only on an international level.

The back-story? Niger’s military junta has been playing hard to get. All of ECOWAS’s attempts to make nice and have a chat were snubbed. That’s right! These coup leaders have a flair for drama, leaving President Mohamed Bazoum and his fam in an unfortunate limbo.

Dropping some heavy words, ECOWAS’s resolution was clear as crystal. They want their forces in Niger ASAP and their mandate? Restore order. The gossip vine says they’re not taking things lightly. But amidst all this, Nigeria’s dashing President, Bola Tinubu, (who, by the way, hosted the recent crisis talk) dropped some wise words. Hinting at a peaceful solution, he said, “All is not lost yet” but also sent shivers down spines with his “use of force as a last resort” statement. Talk about drama!

Now, let’s dish on Ivory Coast’s President, Alassane Ouattara. Serving us some history lessons, he reminded everyone of ECOWAS’s interventions in past crises. Bringing up Liberia, Sierra Leone, Gambia, and Guinea-Bissau, he threw shade on the current situation in Niger saying, “ECOWAS cannot accept this”.

As if the pot wasn’t stirred enough, the audacious coup leaders, in a move right out of a telenovela, declared a brand-new government. Headed by Prime Minister Ali Mahaman Lamine Zeine, the cabinet features a mix of civilians and generals. But what has many whispering in corners is the involvement of neighboring big players like Algeria and Russia. They’ve got opinions, and they’re not afraid to voice them.

Mali and Burkina Faso, equally drama-filled states, stated that intervention would be akin to declaring war. I mean, can this story get any juicier?

But wait, there’s more! Remember Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, the former emir from Nigeria’s city of Kano? The suave diplomat seems to have taken a surprise role as a mediator in this saga. Although unofficial, Sanusi’s secret meeting with coup leader General Abdourahamane Tiani and his supposed message to Tinubu is the stuff of legends!

Now, the UN’s jumping in, with Antonio Guterres expressing worry about the living conditions of Bazoum, who’s reportedly on a diet of plain rice and pasta. Could this be the most-talked-about diet of 2023?

We can’t wrap up without touching on the Sahel. This region is no stranger to action with its turbulent past, jihadist insurgencies, and, unfortunately, status as some of the world’s poorest countries. With the shift of France’s anti-jihadist attention to Niger, one can only wonder what lies in store for this area.

So, as the curtain falls on this episode, with international ties, political intrigue, and an impending showdown, one thing is clear: The West African political theatre is serving up a performance for the ages. Stay tuned, because the next act promises even more dramatic turns!
