Emefiele Ran CBN Like Cabal ATM And Cash Cow, Hire External Auditors To Probe Him – Lawmaker
In a bold move, former federal lawmaker, Senator Shehu Sani, has called on the Federal Government to initiate an independent investigation into the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and its recently suspended governor, Godwin Emefiele. Taking to Twitter to express his views, Sani, who was a member of the 8th Senate, accused the embattled former CBN governor of running the apex bank as an “Automated Teller Machine of the Cabal, a canteen, and cash cow.”
The decision to suspend Emefiele was made by President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as announced in a statement issued by the Director of Information, Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Willie Bassey. The directive instructed Emefiele to vacate his position immediately and hand over to the Deputy Governor (Operations Directorate), Folashodun Adebisi Shonubi, pending the conclusion of an investigation and financial sector reforms.
Senator Sani commended President Tinubu for taking the step to suspend Emefiele and appoint Shonubi as the acting governor. However, he emphasized the need for a comprehensive and unbiased investigation into the CBN’s operations and the conduct of Emefiele. To ensure transparency and accountability, Sani urged the President to engage external auditors to conduct a thorough probe of the apex bank.
Highlighting the importance of an independent audit, Sani stated that only external auditors, untainted by internal biases and conflicts of interest, can objectively assess the functioning of the CBN under Emefiele’s leadership during the Buhari administration. He further alleged that the CBN operated as an “ATM of the Cabal,” serving the interests of a select few and acting as a source of illicit gains for the parasitic elites of the past administration.
By calling for an independent investigation, Senator Sani emphasizes the need to cleanse the CBN of any malfeasance and ensure that the institution serves the best interests of the Nigerian people. The auditors, if appointed, would play a crucial role in shedding light on the bank’s operations, revealing any potential misconduct, and promoting transparency within the financial sector.
As the nation awaits the government’s response to these calls for an independent probe, there is a growing demand for accountability and the establishment of effective mechanisms to prevent any abuse of power within vital institutions like the CBN. The outcome of such an investigation has the potential to shape the future of the financial sector, restore public trust, and reinforce the commitment to good governance in Nigeria.
In the face of these allegations and calls for accountability, it remains to be seen how the Federal Government will respond and what steps will be taken to ensure a fair and impartial investigation into the CBN and the conduct of its former governor. The Nigerian people eagerly await further developments and hope that transparency and justice will prevail in the pursuit of a stronger, more sustainable financial system for the nation.
