Steps To Becoming An Actor, Actress In Nigeria
How to Join the Nollywood movie Industry: a peek into Africa’s biggest movie Industry
Have you ever dreamt of gracing the screens of Nigerian homes and the world at large? Do you sometimes see yourself as one of the Nollywood stars? Who wouldn’t? As a child, I used to play dress up and tried to impersonate my favorite actors. In other words, at one time or the other, some of us have nursed the idea of starring on the big screen.
Being a Nollywood star comes with a lot of attractions; fame, luxury, glitz and glamour. Little wonder why the young ones desperately want to delve in, but a lot of these dreams die because of lack of knowledge on how to go about it.
Breaking into Nollywood may not be an easy ride as it’s a journey that involves patience, hard work, persistence, determination and following due process.
To join in, you need to:
- Discover yourself(Talent)
Recognize your talent through your eyes and the eyes of others around you and know what you want. It’s not just about knowing how to act but realizing the passion that comes with it as this talent has to be combined with a lot of things for it to speak for you, like: hard work, discipline, creative ability, etc.
- Attend Auditions
As a newbie, go for every available audition. Of course, be careful to confirm the genuineness of every audition as there are a lot of fraudsters out there who take advantage of the situation to scam unsuspecting people. This role scouting may not be easy at first but then, success does not come overnight and the more you audition the better your chances of being discovered.
- Be in the Right place
A lot of talents waste away in this country because they are not in the right place. Lagos is known to be the major spot of Nollywood stars as it is home to a lot of them. Although a lot of movies (or most scenes from movies) are not shot in Lagos, most of the creative works start and end here since majority of the film production companies are located in Lagos. Hence, being in the right place can make auditions easier for one looking to join nollywood.
While attending auditions and positioning yourself in the right place, you may not land the roles you desire but you can build relationships that can help your Nollywood dream. Connect with people and stay in touch as they may be of help to you, not necessarily immediately but you get to know when there’s a new job on ground.
- Have an online presence
These days, social media plays a major role in many industries and the movie industry is not left out. For one trying to join the industry, you should have an online presence so as to connect with people in the industry, get useful information on roles and auditions; you can even showcase your talent on these platforms.
In addition to the above points, you should identify with the appropriate bodies governing acting in the country, also try to attend a film school and be versatile. Have a good work attitude while doing all these, and you are on your way to being a star.
