Effective Ways To Overcome Your Fear In 30 Minutes

Fear is what we face on a daily basis. It is so real that it is almost palpable. We fear the unknown, we fear death, we fear failure, we fear people and the list goes on and on.

Fear is perhaps man’s worst enemy as it diminishes the will to fight, darkens the mind’s natural ability to seek for opportunities and deadens the spirit completely. It has both spiritual and health implications.

According to science, fear is known as “phobia” and has been defined as “an irrational and obsessive fear or anxiety usually of or about something in particular”. Notice the words ” irrational” and “obsessive” meaning that such fears are unfounded. Little wonder someone once said that fear is an acronym which means “False Expectations Appearing Real”. This means that they only appear to be real but are actually not.

Types Of Fears

There are several phobias which range from rational things one should be wary of (not necessarily afraid of) to ones that will literally have you rolling on the floor with laughter. They include:

  • Fear of Ghosts- phantasmophobia
  • Fear of Accidents- Dystychiphobia
  • Fear of Clothing- Vestiphobia
  • Fear of Chocolate- Xocolatophia
  • Fear of Hair- Chaetophobia
  • Fear of Menstruation- Menophobia
  • Fear of Trees- Dendrophobia
  • Fear of Vegetables- Lachanophobia
  • Fear of Wine- Oenophobia and so it continues.

Fear has an all round effect on us- spiritual, physical and even mental. We will take a look at them one after the other:

Mental: Research has proven that fear can impair or completely stop the formation of long term memories and even cause damage to some vital parts of the brain such as the hippocampus and amydala etc. With fear comes anxiety which on its own can lead to several health hazards.

The moment we allow fear to habit us, it goes straight to the brain and memories, stays there and begins to multiplicate such that we begin to fear everything. The chronic stage of this is that the victims become even scared to live which is why anxiety patients have been known to be suicidal.

Fear leads to fatigue, depression and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PSTD). All these impact dangerously on the mental health and otherwise of the person leading further to madness, chronic depression and sometimes deaths (suicide most often).

Physical: The physical implications of fear are always very visible. For instance, it can cause intestinal problems such as irregular bowel movements, ulcer and even decreases fertility. It also causes cardio vascular damage, reduces endurance and leads to fatigue.

Fear leaves you spent and sapped of all the energy which ought to have been channeled into productive ventures. It makes one act and look clumsy and awkward. Take for instance if it is an interview or a meeting and you are already afraid, the result is that you are fidgety and jittery. Your sweat pores open up and you sweat more than normal (even if the air conditioner is on the highest), you may also begin to stutter or stammer as the case may be.

It also slows down your brain processing speed and ability to react. This is how it works: It permeates the brain and interrupts or shuts down completely (depending on the degree of the fear) all the processes and activities that would have ordinarily allowed the brain to regulate emotions, read and understand verbal and non verbal cues and think on them before reacting.

When fear sets in however, it impairs our thinking and decision-making leaving us susceptible to high emotions and on the spot events. The result is that we act irrationally and without a second thought.

Spiritual: It even has spiritual implications (to show you how profound it is). From a spiritual stand point, the  moment fear walks into the door, faith walks right out. You begin to doubt God and when this happens, the devil disarms your already loose guards.

A glaring example in the Bible is king Saul. When it was time to do battle, Samuel the prophet specifically told Saul to wait for him to come and do the sacrifice. Samuel tarried and in a state of fear, Saul panicked and then did the sacrifice himself.

The result: Samuel was angry and passed instant judgement on him (the kingdom of Israel was taken from him and given to his servant, David plus, he also lost his life and that of his three sons on the battle field). This is only one in several instances of what fear can cause in the Bible.

It is one of the devil’s most potent tools against believers and he has been wielding it to torment and enslave them. The result is spiritual laxity and slavery.

As a Christian, God has empowered you with weapons of warfare- prayers, the scriptures etc to fight the devil. But when the devil steps in, he makes everything appear bleak, you lose focus on the word of God and then he strikes. This is the singular reason why a lot of Christians have been and are still being defeated.

The good news however is that we can fight fear (spiritually and physically). We only need to have a positive mindset, a resolute spirit and then we can actually fight it to a standstill.

From the spiritual aspect, we need to anchor on the word of God and prayers to successfully banish fear from from our lives. Some of the tips to fight gear include the following:

Take a Break: It would be absolutely impossible to overcome fear when your whole mind is flooded with the thoughts. Therefore give yourself a break, take time out to leave the scene or simply find a distraction from it. You can play music, get a drink, sleep, take a walk etc.  It does not matter what you choose to do. What matters is you are taking your mind off the issue.

Brood Less: You ought to have known by now that no amount of brooding or worrying can change any ugly situation instead it affects your health and ability to find a reasonable solution. Channel that strength into finding a lasting solution to the problem.

Face It: This is probably the best fear hack yet. Facing your fear instead of running from or avoiding them is the first step towards overcoming them. Face them head on and tell yourself that you won’t back down no matter how much you flinch.

Let us take for instance you are afraid of your boss. Ask yourself “why am I afraid of him/her”? Most times, employees claim their bosses are too strict or harsh however, look inwardly and ask yourself if you are not contributing to it. ” Are you up to date”, this may actually be part of the reasons why it seems your boss is always angry at  you not necessarily that he/she hates you.

Ensure you tie every loophole and loose ends so that you can match his/her pace when they start asking for your weekly or monthly report as the case may be. When you have a clean slate and he/she has nothing on you, you might just begin to develop a cordial relationship with him/her and you will begin to realise that your boss is not a monster after all.

What is the Worst That Can Happen?: Yes, this is the question we ought to ask ourselves all the time. If you are going through any situation, always look beyond the now to the after. It could be death, loss of everything you hold dear, heart attack etc.

Now after the imagination, try making it happen. Not possible right? Great! The moment you realise that no matter how much you think and imagine all the worst things that can be (but are not) then you will begin to realise that most fears are unfounded. Focus on and be in the moment. Do not let the current situation define you.

It Could Happen to Anyone: Do not begin to think that what  you are going through is peculiar to you. That is not true. Life is full of ups and downs and what you are going through can happen to just about anyone.

Never forget that life is not perfect neither is our lives. As long as we continue to live there will be bad days, good days and messy days. So just as the sun goes up and comes down, the fear will diminish and things will get back to normal again.

Look at Similar Instances: Sometimes you should challenge fearful thoughts when they set in. For instance, if you are afraid of drowning in a pool, ask yourself how many people actually drown in pools (especially with the presence of life jackets and life coaches). For how long are you going to shut yourself out from doing normal or even things that make you happy just because you are afraid of them.

Brace yourself and live because even living is a risk on its own. If you feel you cannot go to the pool alone (for instance) ask some friends to go with you. Make it a hangout kind of thing without letting them know it is because you are afraid and little by little, the fear gets lesser until you can go on your own.

Share Your Fears: A problem shared is a problem half-solved, well that is the same with your fears. Talking about what you are going through can be good because if the other person has had such a similar experience, they may be willing to share theirs and the lesson you will glean from them can go a long way in helping you solve your own fear.

Therefore, talk to your partner, close friends or family members (which ever you feel most comfortable with) about  your fears. They should be people who are reliable and whom you can trust with your innermost fears and secrets. Their advice and suggestions might be everything you have been looking for.

Fantasies: We often preach about being in a real world and not in a land of fantasies but ditch that, fantasies can prove to be a  great therapy for fear.

Visualize a beautiful place or scenario alone. For instance on the beach, or lying in a warm bed or in a hangout with your partner or family members. Stay in this make believe world for some minutes and soothe your nerves.

The aim is this: while it will not take the fear away, it will definitely calm you down for some time while rejuvenating you to face the fears from where you last stopped.

Reward Yourself: When in the event that you finally have that meeting or make that call that you have been dreading or whatever it was that was giving you sleepless nights, you definitely deserve to treat yourself to something nice. A spa, a gift, a nice dinner, a visit to see your favourite movie etc. Anything that makes you happy just do it and feel good with yourself.

From the spiritual stand point, here are some scriptures to guide you when you are at your lowest ebb:

Isaiah 43:1: “Do not fear, for I have redeemed you, I have called you by my  name, you are mine. This is like a command from God not to fear. The phrase ” do not fear ” is used at least eighty times in the Bible underscoring how important it is. Here God is specifically telling us that we are his and when he is for us, who can be against us.

Deuteronomy 31: 8: “He will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid, do not be discouraged”. If only Christians remember and memorize this particular Bible passage, the Devil will have nothing on them.

John 4: 18: “Perfect love casts out all fear”.  At the first glance, this scripture seems vague. You will wonder how love can possibly cast out fear. But on closer meditation, you will understand that God is love-the perfect love so when we get closer to him he casts out all fear that we may be having. So the closer we are to God, the lesser we have anything to fear.

Psalm 18: 2: ” The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer” what else could be clearer than this? If God is all these and more, what can possibly go wrong? Nothing.

All these and more have been kept for your use and meditation so that when the devil strikes with his favourite tool, we can match him with faith, prayers and some of these and other similar Bible passages.
