How To Know The Will Of God In A Relationship
How To Know God’s Will In A Relationship
Knowing the will of God in a relationship is one of the most important and sometimes challenging pursuits for believers. Relationships are significant in our lives, shaping who we are and influencing our walk with God. Seeking His will in these matters shows a desire to live in obedience and align our relationships with His purpose. It’s essential to approach this with a spirit of humility and surrender, fully trusting that God’s wisdom far surpasses our own. The key lies in listening to Him, relying on His Word, and being sensitive to the leading of the Holy Spirit.
First, we need to be grounded in Scripture. God’s Word is the ultimate guide, providing timeless principles and wisdom for every area of our lives, including relationships. Proverbs 3:5-6 (KJV) encourages us to “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.” This means being willing to set aside our preconceived notions, preferences, and cultural norms to accept God’s direction. As we seek His will, it’s essential to be deeply rooted in the Bible, ensuring that our relationships align with His commands and principles.
Prayer is another crucial element in discerning God’s will. Prayer helps us cultivate intimacy with God and attune ourselves to His desires. When we’re intentional about praying for guidance in our relationships, He will give us peace or unease, helping us know if a relationship is aligned with His will or if it should be reconsidered. Philippians 4:6-7 (KJV) assures us, “Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” In prayer, we pour out our concerns, surrender our will, and seek His direction.
The counsel of godly mentors or spiritual leaders is also essential. Proverbs 15:22 (KJV) tells us, “Without counsel purposes are disappointed: but in the multitude of counsellors they are established.” Surrounding ourselves with mature believers who share godly wisdom can provide clarity and support. They can often see things from a more objective perspective and offer guidance that aligns with God’s principles.
Being sensitive to the leading of the Holy Spirit is crucial as well. The Spirit speaks to us through a still, small voice, leading us toward God’s will. If we feel uneasy or conflicted about a relationship despite our efforts to justify it, it could be the Spirit warning us that the relationship isn’t right. The Spirit brings conviction and clarity, helping us discern if a relationship is beneficial or harmful.
God’s will often becomes evident through the fruit of the relationship. Galatians 5:22-23 (KJV) lists the fruits of the Spirit: “love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance.” If the relationship is producing these fruits, it’s a strong indication that it’s rooted in God’s will. If the relationship breeds strife, jealousy, selfishness, or other negative traits, it might be wise to reconsider.
Patience is a virtue often overlooked in discerning God’s will in relationships. We live in a fast-paced world that values immediate results, but God’s timing is perfect. Psalm 27:14 (KJV) reminds us to “Wait on the Lord: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the Lord.” Taking time to wait on God can prevent us from rushing into relationships that aren’t meant for us.
Another critical aspect of knowing God’s will is to be honest with ourselves. Are we seeking His will, or are we trying to twist it to match our desires? We must assess our intentions, desires, and motivations. If our primary goal is to please God and reflect His love in our relationships, He will honor that sincerity.
Ultimately, aligning ourselves with God’s will in a relationship starts with being aligned with Him personally. Jesus said in Matthew 6:33 (KJV), “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” By seeking God’s kingdom first, our hearts and minds are transformed, and our relationships follow suit. His will becomes our will, and we are filled with joy and peace as we walk according to His purpose.
Knowing the will of God in a relationship is a journey that requires patience, prayer, and a willingness to surrender. It involves relying on Scripture, the guidance of the Holy Spirit, and godly counsel. It also means being honest with ourselves and having the courage to wait on God’s perfect timing. When we commit to seeking His will, He will direct our steps and bless us with relationships that bring Him glory.
