A Nigerian medical practitioner practicing in the United Kingdom has found himself entangled in the webs of legal consequence after a disciplinary action against his 16-year-old son, involving physical chastisement with a belt, resulted in the youngster being taken into government custody. This surprising turn of events was disclosed on social media by an advocate for child rights who goes by the handle, pepstalk1, on Wednesday.

In her Instagram post, pepstalk1 narrated the chain of events that led to this unexpected conclusion. According to her account, the doctor had discovered his son and a group of his friends, who had been invited over for a shared study session, veering off track from their academic pursuits. Instead, they were caught viewing content that was deemed inappropriate.

Upon making this discovery, the Nigerian doctor, overtaken by frustration and disappointment, resorted to a traditional disciplinary approach and proceeded to physically chastise his son with a belt. However, this act of punishment was not carried out in isolation – the son’s friends bore witness to the whole ordeal.

These friends, disturbed by what they saw, decided to alert the authorities. They informed the police about the incident, reporting that the Nigerian doctor was beating his son while repeatedly voicing his disappointment in the form of a rhetorical question: “Is this how you want to become a doctor?”

According to the child rights advocate, the story continued to unfold with alarming speed. “Two friends of the doctor’s son had come over to the doctor’s house for a sleepover, planning to study together in preparation for their General Certificate of Secondary Education examination. In the early hours of the morning, around 3 am, the doctor surreptitiously entered the boys’ room and was dismayed to find them engrossed in an inappropriate video instead of studying.”

“The immediate reaction of the doctor was one of anger, leading to him physically punishing his son with a belt, all the while witnessed by the stunned friends. In reaction to this, the friends fled from the scene to notify the police, who promptly responded and removed the boy from his father’s house.”

Subsequently, the matter was brought before a court of law. During the court session, the friends recalled hearing the father’s admonishment – “Is this how you want to become a doctor?” – while punishing his son.

Furthermore, the boy claimed that his father was in the habit of forcing him to study subjects he had no interest in, and had been pressuring him to choose medicine as a career path at university, a decision he was not ready to make.

Eventually, the court ruled in favor of placing the doctor’s 16-year-old son under government care. The ruling established that the boy was no longer permitted to live with his father, thus effectively resulting in the doctor losing custody of his son.
