Nigerian Lecturer Who Slapped IMSU University Student Suspended!
IMSU Lecturer Desmond Izunwanne Suspended For Slapping Late Imo University Students
The Imo State University, Owerri, has suspended one of its lecturers, Dr. Desmond Izunwanne, over allegations of assault. Izunwanne was accused of slapping female students who arrived at a class session behind schedule and in non-departmental uniform.
The incident, which occurred in the Physiology Department of the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences, was captured on video and went viral on social media platforms. According to reports, the female students were running late for their class, and when they entered the hall, they were confronted by Dr. Izunwanne. The lecturer allegedly slapped them repeatedly, causing them emotional and physical distress.
The management of the university, in response to the incident, condemned the lecturer’s behavior, calling it “barbaric and unbecoming” of someone occupying such a position. A statement released by the university’s spokesperson, Ralph Njokuobi, confirmed that a management meeting was held, where the suspension of the lecturer was approved.
Furthermore, the university set up a three-man disciplinary committee to investigate the immediate and remote causes that led to Dr. Izunwanne’s “uncouth behavior.” The committee is expected to submit its findings to the university’s management for further action.
The incident has sparked outrage among students and the public, with many calling for justice for the female students. Many have taken to social media to express their displeasure and demand that the university takes decisive action against the lecturer.
In response to the outrage, the university’s management implored “the general public and indeed all Human Rights Organisations” to allow it to “conduct a proper investigation and recommend appropriate sanctions where necessary in line with the staff conditions of service.” The university reiterated its commitment to maintaining academic and moral standards, stating that it would not tolerate any breach of its rules and regulations.
The incident has highlighted the need for universities to take the issue of assault and harassment seriously. It is essential for universities to put in place measures that protect students from any form of abuse, be it physical or emotional. Students should feel safe and comfortable in their learning environments, and any lecturer who violates their rights should be held accountable.
