September 1st, 2017 – Another Innocent Nigerian Killed By South African Policemen As Death Toll Of Nigerian Killed In SA Hits 116

The Nigeria Union in South Africa has confirmed the killing of a member, Kingsley Ikeri, at Vryheid town in Kwazulu Natal Province on Aug. 30.

Ikeri, 27, was a businessman and native of Mbaitolu in Imo.

In December 2016, Metropolitan Police in Cape Town had suffocated to death a man, Victor Nnadi, also from Imo.

Mr Bartholomew Eziagulu, Chairman of the union in the province, told NAN in Durban on Friday that Ikeri was allegedly tortured to death by the police.

He said the union’s investigations revealed that the police arrested the deceased and a friend on suspicion that they were carrying hard drugs.

He said while interrogating him, the police used plastic to cover his face to extort information from him.

“In the process, they suffocated the deceased. When the police took him to the hospital, he was confirmed dead,” he said.

Mr Adetola Olubajo, the Secretary General of the union, said the national secretariat had been informed about the death of the Nigerian.

He said the body had informed appropriate Nigerian authorities and the police in South Africa.

NAN reports that a senior diplomat from the Nigerian Consulate in Johannesburg had visited Vryheid on a fact-finding mission.

Some members of the union and other Nigerians accompanied the diplomat to the town.

A total 116 Nigerians have been killed in South Africa through extrajudicial means in the last two years, according to the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Foreign Affairs and Diaspora, Mrs Abike Dabiri-Erewa.

Seven in 10 of the killings were carried out by the South African Police.

The presidential aide disclosed this sometime in February when she met with the South African High Commissioner to Nigeria, Lulu Louis Mnguni in Abuja.

It is so shameful, disheartening and outrageous that while our people are been killed helplessly in a systematic manner by the racist South Africans, Nigerian government is busy taking stock of those been gruesomely murdered in South African soil. So shocking is also the fact that even the climbing number of the death resulting from the xenophobic attack on Nigerians living in South Africa has not moved our government an inch to take diplomatic action against the south african Government involving a strong protest and warning. Our government need to stop there indeferent and unconcern attitude toward the ongoing massacre of our people in South Africa. South African government need to be reminded that there interest in terms of investment in Nigeria spanning into billions of dollars is at greater risk and may come under direct attack from our people in a bid to avenge the death of there brothers in there country. On this note, prompt diplomatic effort need to be carried out by both government so as to avert the potentially dangerous situation that may erupt between the two Nations.

My friend…whether Nigerians are into selling of hard drugs that have severely affected the health of others or not, South Africa as a sovereign Nation has existing laws in place meant to punish those found guilty of illicit sales of drugs in there country. It is therefore not anybody’s responsibility to take laws into there hands by lynching other nationals that flout those laws, considering the fact that some of the victims maybe innocents. And for South African police to be taking the lead in killing Nigerians dwelling in there country is to show the height of racisms, lawlessness, barbarism and radicalism on there part. That is why there is a need for Nigeria Government to take a diplomatic action against South African Government for deliberately condoning the evil acts perpetuated by there police force and there nationals.
