PDP Condemns Buhari For Authorising NIS To Handcuff Olisa Metuh

January 19, 2016 – PDP Condemns Buhari For Authorising NIS To Handcuff Olisa Metuh

The PDP released a statement today to express shock to how NIS handcuffed the party’s former spokesman, Olisa Metuh.

The statement reads,

The PDP party condemns in totality the brazen display of authoritarianism demonstrated by the President Muhammadu Buhari-led APC Government in handcuffing its National Publicity Secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh even when the court is yet to hear his case.

This development which unexpectedly elicited widespread public outcry clearly betrays an extra-judicial, top political witch-hunt policy of the APC, carefully designed to humiliate, embarrass and portray PDP leaders as common criminals and set the stage to cow and decimate opposition and perceived foes of the government.

The question remains, if not to mortify, dehumanize and break our National Publicity Secretary, who has been very vocal against the APC administration, and of course to send a signal to others critical of the government, what else would have informed the decision to produce him in court in handcuffs, even when his case does not border on security threat?

Is this an attempt to sway the court and ambush the judicial process against our National Publicity Secretary, all because of his stance against observed ineptitude and dictatorial tendencies of this administration?

The PDP invites all Nigerians and the international community to note the emerging barefaced abuse of state power and violation of constitutional provisions regarding the arrest, detention and eventual arraignment of our spokesperson.

Nigerians by now, should be extremely scared that our country is fast drifting into a police state where being in opposition or holding views divergent to that of the government makes one a criminal and an enemy of the state.

For now, the target of the on-going lopsided war against corruption is the PDP and its leaders. All APC members, including those with known corruption issues are immune from investigation, arrest and prosecution.

However, more worrisome is the fact that institutions of government, especially security and corrective agencies have now fallen victims of dictatorial abuses. Our fear now is that in no time, ordinary citizens of Nigerians, who in the last 16 years have lived under the rule of law and constitutionally guaranteed personal liberty, would begin to suffer brutality and oppression.

Under PDP administration, some Nigerians, including APC leader and former Governor of Lagos State, Asiwaju Ahmed Tinubu were tried but never humiliated; now we see security operatives under this regime being used to crush and humiliate the opposition.

Finally, while we study the bail conditions, we urge all PDP members to remain calm, united, focused and continue to pray for the nation and her people. We also urge the media to remain on the side of justice, fairness and rule of law and resist the pressure of being used as a tool to promote arbitrariness and abuse of process in the so-called fight against corruption.

Signed:

Prof. Adewale Oladipo
National Secretary

So who is above the law? An ordinary Party Spokesperson?. The problem with most Nigerians is “big man syndrome”. Come to America and see Supreme Court Judges in handcuffs when indicted for corruption. It is ignorance, arrogance and lack of exposure undermining the course of progress in Nigeria. If you don’t want to be put in handcuffs, stay on the right side of the law. Yeye people

Being above the law has nothing to do with handcuffing a suspected criminal before being found guilty of the offenses he/she is being accused of, I totally support buhari in dealing with everyone of them but if only found guilty. We must be careful not to return back to the days of dictatorships. Handcuffing Metuh is purely against his fundamental human rights until he’s found guilty of those offenses. Our emotions shouldn’t control our sense of reasoning.

@ The author; Adewale Oladapo…I will not call you a professor because that will just be re-echoing and fanning the embers of your inherent folly. So Adewale Oladapo; you asked what would have informed producing Metuh in court with handcuffs?..the answer to that question is short and simple ;because Metuh is a common thief, albeit his ongoing court proceedings.
It might interest you to note that most thieves in Nigeria are brought to court in handcuffs especially the violent ones. So I ask you why is Metuh’s case so different?
Also the handcuffs was informed by Metuh’s thuggish behaviour whilst in custody. When Metuh tore-up is original statement,he chewed it and ate it all up hence he was hungry due to his self inflicted hunger strike. So the good gesture of “Handcuffs”was simply a preventative measure aimed at preventing Metuh from further harm to himself.(This is common practice when criminals begin to act vicious).
So Adewale Oladapo deal with this..and may I correct your earlier assertions ;which claimed putting handcuffs on Metuh to court “elicited public outcry”…please I ask you-which populace are you referring to? I’m sure you were certainly NOT referring to the Nigerian public-whose joy at the moment knows no bounds-hence Metuh’s court trial and eventual conviction…so deservingly so..like a kleptomaniac that he is.
This court case is a “Victory” for all the hardworking people of Nigeria, which includes the defenceless poor masses.

What is wrong with handcuffing a criminal and looter of the people’sfunds? These PDP sre worse than armed robbers because they are dirty and heartless animals living in human body that destroyed our economy, education, hospitals, roads and bridges, electricity supply, and our national security because of their corruption, looting, embezzlement, mismanagement, and money laundering operations of the past sixteen years. Shame on them for condemning the president fight against corruption.

I don’t understand what this professor referred to as humiliation and authoritarianism demonstrated by Buhari. Buhari has nothing to do with this. Are you saying the authority should turn a blind eye to this kind of offense just as it was during the administration of Jonathan?. For crying out loud, you are a professor and you are talking like ignorant. Olisa Methu stole Nigerian money and he was given chance to return the money in order to get soft landing but he refused. He allowed himself to be humiliated. Buhari has even tolerated and given him an opportunity to sober but he believed some sycophant like you will always support him. We need to stop supporting wrongdoing and embrace virtue if we really want our situation to change positively for us in Nigeria.
