Tinubu Implements Sweeping Changes to Security Appointments
In a bold move aimed at revitalizing the nation’s security apparatus, President Bola Tinubu has approved the immediate retirement of all Service Chiefs, including the Inspector-General of Police, as well as the Comptroller-General of the Nigerian Customs Service. The decision, announced in a statement on Monday by the Director of Information in the Office of the Secretary-General to the Federation, Willie Bassey, signals a significant shift in the leadership of Nigeria’s security forces.
The statement disclosed that Nuhu Ribadu, who was recently appointed as the Security Adviser to the President, has now been appointed as the National Security Adviser. Ribadu’s wealth of experience and deep knowledge of security matters make him a fitting candidate for the role, and his appointment is expected to bring a fresh perspective to the nation’s security challenges.
Major General Christopher Musa, a highly respected military officer who previously served as the Theatre Commander of Operation Hadin Kai, will assume the role of Chief of Defence Staff, succeeding General Lucky Irabor. Major General T. A Lagbaja, known for his exceptional leadership skills, will replace Lieutenant General Farouk Yahaya as the Chief of Army Staff. Rear Admiral E. A Ogalla, a seasoned naval officer, has been appointed as the new Chief of Naval Staff, succeeding Vice Admiral Awwal Gambo. Air Vice Marshal H.B Abubakar, renowned for his strategic acumen, will take over from Air Marshal Oludayo Amao as the Chief of Air Staff.
These appointments reflect President Tinubu’s commitment to assembling a dynamic and competent team to address the nation’s security challenges. President Tinubu has also prioritized the appointment of competent officers to key positions within the Presidential Villa. These appointments include Col. Adebisi Onasanya as the Brigade of Guards Commander, Lt. Col. Moshood Abiodun Yusuf, Lt. Col. Auwalu Baba Inuwa, Lt. Col. Mohammed J. Abdulkarim, and Lt. Col. Olumide A. Akingbesote, who will assume command roles in various guard battalions and ensure the safety and security of the Presidential Villa.
In an effort to bolster the nation’s customs operations, Adeniyi Adewale has been appointed as the Acting Comptroller General of Customs. His experience and dedication to service make him an ideal candidate for the role, and his appointment is expected to bring about positive changes in customs administration.
President Tinubu has also expanded his advisory team, appointing two additional Special Advisers and two Senior Assistants. Hadiza Bala Usman will serve as the Special Adviser for Policy Coordination, while Hannatu Musa Musawa will focus on the Culture and Entertainment Economy. Sen. Abdullahi Abubakar Gumel and Hon. (Barr) Olarewaju Kunle Ibrahim have been appointed as Senior Special Assistants, with a focus on National Assembly Matters.
