zenith bank to sack ekiti workers

September 22, 2016 – Zenith Bank May Sack Workers From Ekiti State As Fayose Orders State To Close All Accounts At The Bank

Ekiti State Man Of The People, Ayo Fayose has ordered the state to stop transacting business with Zenith Bank.

The action is not unconnected with the face-off between him and Zenith on the freezing of his personal accounts domicilled in the bank by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

According to a circular from the Office of the Accountant General on Tuesday, all Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) must comply with the order within 48 hours.

The circular was addressed to the head of Service, permanent secretaries, general managers, administrative secretaries, heads of Non-Ministerial Departments and agencies and tertiary institutions.

The MDAs and institutions have begun implementation of the order to meet up with the deadline.

The circular, which was signed by the Accountant General, Mrs. O.O. Owolabi, is titled: “Stoppage of banking relationship with the Zenith Bank Plc.”

It reads: “The state government has directed immediate stoppage of all banking relationships with Zenith Bank.

“All Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) are expected to adhere strictly to this instruction and sever transaction with the bank within 48 hours.

“By extension, workers’ salaries cease to be remitted to salary accounts domicilled with the bank forthwith. They are, therefore, advised to supply alternative bank accounts with their respective MDAs for transmission to this office within 60 days.

“Kindly, give the contents of this circular the widest publicity it deserves. The governor is poised to address the state on the matter in due course. Thank you.”

The fear of job loss has gripped Ekiti indigenes working in the bank, especially the main Ado-Ekiti branch on Secretariat Road and the campus branch at Ekiti State University (EKSU).

The workers are apprehensive of a repeat of the backlash of Fayose’s strained relationship with Ecobank, which led to the shutdown of the bank’s two branches.

Ecobank sacked scores of Ekiti indigenes following the government’s crackdown, and closed its operations.

The EFCC on May 24 froze two Zenith Bank accounts belonging to Fayose for alleged laundering of about N1.2 billion believed to be part of the arms fund from the ex-National Security Adviser (NSA), Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd.)

The cash was allegedly released to the governor to fund his campaign in the 2014 governorship election.

Fayose claimed Zenith Bank funded his campaign but the bank denied the allegation.

The governor sued the EFCC and the bank at the Federal High Court, Ado-Ekiti, seeking an order to de-freeze the account, which the court declined.

The matter was adjourned till September 30. [The Nation]

  1. POLITICS IN HIGH PLACES !ZENITH BANK- WORRY NOT,YOU HV DONE VERY WELL BY EXPOSING HIM . 2. @egberimama, y should we always put tribalism into everything, nawaoo, must***** if u don’t understand a situation,

  3. Clearly this Government has got no clue about Governance. They should be protecting jobs as a government. But the contrary is obviously in play in Ekiti state. The people of Ekiti I feel your pains and God will deliver you someday.

  4. Is Zenith Bank in the state only for the government account? There are other businesses transacting with the bank na.

    Are they not EKITI indigenes?

    So why the laying off?

  5. IT IS said that when two elephants fight, grasses suffer. Fayose is one, and Zenith Bank is the other. But if Zenith Bank whould not ask the whole of Ekiti people who maintain their personal or business accounts with them to close them because of this strain between Zenith bank and Fayose, it would be very wicked, evil and hypocritical of them to sack the poor Ekiti State indigines in their employ merely because of it. If they should sack, let them altogether pack from Ekiti State.

  6. What! This is outrageous! Is FAYOSE insane? Why would any normal Governor who should be proud and always be seen at the forefront promoting the healthy shape of the banking sector in his state be dissuading his own people from banking with the ZENITH?

Is he promoting the healthy economic condition in his state which banking sector is part of, or he’s killing it? He is only foolishly and unnecessarily bringing untold hardship and set back to his own people simply because he’s criminal money laundry act has been exposed by the ZENITH BANK to the EFCC.

Since banking sector is a vital part of any nation’s economy, the federal Government in collaborations with CBN should wade in to neutralize and stop EKITI STATE Government’s illegal crackdown on ZENITH bank.

Not every nigerian will like to be party to corruption, for this reason, criminal Fayose has no right whatsoever to trample on the right of any banking institution in his state. Fayose should be warn!

  7. If all you know how to do is a bank job, then you ain‘t knowing nothing yet.
When they are sacked, they should consider farming as the next best.

    D Hunter.

  8. When Ekiti was chopping rice nobody was talking, now that they are crying they wants me to talk,Mbanu. How can you vote in an Agbero to govern you twice,,,,Terrible mistake…Please keep eating your rice oo….Afterall Ekiti people have been eating rice since the days of Awolowo..

  9. When you hold public office, I learn one swears to Oath of Office to perform the duties “without fear or favour, affection or ill will to all manner of people”.
Public Office is not contemplated to be used to settle scores ! This expectation goes both ways so I hope both warring parties will consider the bank workers and other indigenes who have transactions with the Bank !
