Another 3 Storey Building Collapses In Apapa Lagos GRA
A three-storey building under construction located at Ladipo Oluwole Street in the GRA, Apapa area of Lagos State, has reportedly collapsed. This news comes barely 24 hours after the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, ordered the demolition of some buildings in Banana Island over defective structures. According to the Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Magret Adeseye, the building collapsed on Sunday due to a thunder strike that occurred during the early morning downpour. Fortunately, no casualties were reported, and efforts are being made to remove the rubble.
The Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Dr Femi Oke-Osanyitolu, confirmed the incident, stating that the agency received a report of a partial collapse of a three-floor building at Plot 5996 {NOS 43B} along Ladipo OLUWOLE Street, Apapa Local Government Area, Lagos. He explained that the frontal area of the second floor of the building collapsed early in the morning on April 23, 2023. The property was previously served the CN, STW & Seal Up Notices by officials of the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LABSCA).
Asimiyu Tiamiyu, a volunteer with the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps in Ajeromi Ifelodun Local Council Development Area, was one of the early callers at the scene. He reported that all the workers at the site of the collapsed building had gone on Sallah break.
The incident has once again brought attention to the issue of building collapses in Lagos State. In recent years, there have been several cases of building collapses, resulting in loss of lives and properties. It is important that the Lagos State government takes urgent steps to ensure that building regulations and standards are adhered to in the state, and that faulty buildings are identified and demolished before they become death traps for unsuspecting occupants.
This new building collapse has sparked concerns among residents of the area and other parts of Lagos, who are worried about the safety of buildings under construction across the state. The collapse of the building in Apapa has once again highlighted the need for the government to step up its efforts in ensuring that all construction activities in the state are carried out in compliance with safety standards and regulations.
The Lagos State Government has been working to ensure the safety of buildings in the state. In the wake of the collapse of the building in Banana Island, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu had ordered the immediate demolition of all buildings with structural defects in the highbrow area. The government had also issued a warning to owners of buildings with structural defects across the state to either repair or demolish such buildings to prevent loss of lives and property.
The incident in Apapa has underscored the need for the government to intensify its efforts in enforcing building regulations and safety standards. The government must ensure that all buildings under construction are inspected regularly to detect any potential safety hazards and ensure that all safety measures are put in place to prevent the occurrence of accidents.
It is also important for individuals and organizations involved in construction activities to prioritize safety in their operations. Builders and contractors must ensure that all safety measures are taken and that all workers at construction sites are adequately trained on safety procedures to prevent accidents.
Meanwhile, rescue operations are ongoing at the site of the collapsed building in Apapa, as efforts are being made to remove the rubble and ensure the safety of the surrounding buildings.
