July 2nd, 2012 – Woman Sent To Kirikiri Prison Over N2,000 Bail
A house wife, Mrs. Patience Emmanuel, wept bitterly in the open court in Lagos State, southwest Nigeria when she was taken into a Black Maria on her way to prison custody because her husband could not meet up with N2,000 to facilitate her bail.
Her helpless husband watched as she was being taken to prison by a warder, he bent his head down and sighed before leaving the court premises.
Mrs. Emmanuel was remanded in prison custody at Kirikiri Lagos pending when she will meet her bail conditions.
The 34-year old woman was arraigned before a Yaba Magistrate’s Court for assault. She was granted bail in the sum of N2,000 with one surety in like sum.
Her husband, Emmanuel who had earlier thought that he had to pay the money in cash complained that he cannot afford it. Not knowning what to do, he watched helplessly as his wife was taken to prison because she could not met her bail conditions.
He looked very sad. The embattled husband later told reporters that it was sad for him watching his wife go to prison because of N2,000 only.
Patience was arraigned before a Yaba Magistrate’s Court for assault on Magret Sunday during a fight by hitting her with a stone on her head.
The incident happened at 28, Awolowo Street, Oworoshoki, Lagos.
The matter was reported to the police and Patience was arrested and charged to court for an assault contrary to Section 355 of the Criminal Code Law of Lagos State of Nigeria 2003.
She pleaded not guilty.
The presiding Magistrate, Mrs. S K Matepo granted her bail in the most liberal terms. However, she was remanded in prison custody because she did not meet up with bail conditions on time.
The matter was adjourned till 16 July, 2012.
