June 15, 2012 – Armed Robbers Kill Lagos Police Inspector

Armed robbers have gunned down a police inspector at the Morogbo Police Station at the Lagos-Badagry expressway, Lagos State, Southwest Nigeria.

The robbers also injured a police sergeant, corporal and constable during the attack.

Police sources gave the name of the deceased inspector as Kalu Igwe.

He was the charge room officer when the robbers struck around 8 p.m. that night.

The robbers who operated on three motorcycles were trailing a businessman who was coming from Cotonou and on getting to the Morogbo Police Division at 8 p.m. sighted policemen who were in front of the station and shot at them leading to the death of the inspector and three others sustained severe injuries.

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ngozi Braide, however, denied that the inspector died. She said: “the robbers who operated on motorcycle were trailing Alhaji Tunde who was in his Armada SUV with registration number J 839 EKY at the Morogbo area when the driver of the SUV diverted towards Igbekele Road which is beside the police station.

“As he drove into the police station for safety, the robbers shot sporadically and the policemen responded, making the robbers to flee and unable to snatch the SUV. The owner of the SUV and the driver escaped unhurt while no policeman was injured or killed.”
