August 28, 2013 – Rivers State Sports Commissioner Fred Igwe Attacked By Armed Robbers, Escape Assassination Attempt
THE Rivers State Commissioner for Sports, Mr. Fred Igwe, escaped death when a group of unknown gunmen suspected to be armed robbers shot him.
Igwe was said to be on his way home when he was attacked by the hoodlums around Elelewon-Akpajo Road in the outskirts of Port Harcourt.
The commissioner, according to sources close to him, had visited his home town in Alito, Eleme Local Government Area and was on his way back to Port Harcourt when he ran into the robbers’ ambush on Sunday.
The gunshots from the bandits was said to have created bullet holes on the body of the vehicle, which he drove to his village.
“It happened in the evening around 7pm when he was coming back from his village in Alito, Eleme Local Government Area. He is in the hospital now and he is recuperating.
“God really saved him because when we considered the way his attackers rained bullets on his (commissioner) car, we did not know that he would survive. In fact, Igwe’s survival was a miracle,” a source close to the commissioner said.
When contacted, the State Police Public Relations Officer, Mrs. Angela Agabe, confirmed the incident, but said she was not aware of the commissioner’s whereabouts.
Agabe said, “He (commissioner) was attacked between Elelewon and Akpajo. He reported that they wanted to rob him. We learnt he escaped and he also sustained minor injuries.”
She, however, explained that the police had since swung into action with a view to apprehending the commissioner’s attackers.
