September 24, 2016 – “God Has Not Blessed Me Enough” – Nollywood Actor Adekola Tijani Confesses
Excerpts from Nollywood Actor Adekola Tijani’s recent chat with Razzle Dazzle.
The Yoruba section of Nollywood is widely known for its various cliques and caucuses. Which do you belong?
We have our own and it is called The Unique Charitable Foundation which is headed by Muyiwa Ademola who is the president. Faithia Balogun is the vice-president while Femi Adebayo is the financial secretary with myself and Sanyeri also included. That is the caucus we work with and go out together.
Do you get scripts for most of these movies you feature in or you are just left to improvise and come up with what you can on your own?
Yes, by God’s grace. We get the scripts, read and digest them and we pencil down whatever ideas we have and then present it when we get to location. It may be about subtraction or addition of certain areas but you won’t know the direction of the movie.
What direction will you want your career to take while noting that God has blessed you to some length?
God has not blessed me enough; I pray God blesses me more. You know the nature of our work, one must keep praying, continue to work hard and be humble but on the whole, I believe I am still going far. May God by His grace help me get there. I pray for grace, life and good health to ensure and enjoy God’s blessings.
Could one say being funny played a role in convincing your wife to date you when you met her?
Work is paramount but you know many people are funny; especially in this industry of ours but once the camera is on, they are unable to show it. But in real life, when you see how gentle Baba Suwe and Baba Latin are, you won’t believe they are that funny but once the camera starts rolling, inspiration comes to naturally but I can’t say that played a role in my wife’s decision to date and then marry me.
By the time we met and even got married, I was not known as a comic actor but surely you can’t discountenance that I must have been a funny person to her.
How true is it that you and your wife had to wait for five years after marriage before your baby arrived?
Yes, we did but in the end God took control. I was totally overwhelmed and grateful to God when the baby arrived. It is one of life’s challenges but one must keep going. It taught me more about life and how to handle life’s challenges.
