John Okafor Mr Ibu Talks Politics & Why He Named Daughter Chelsea
Sept 15, 2014 – John Okafor Mr Ibu Talks Politics & Why He Named Daughter Chelsea
See excerpt from a recent interview with Nollywood funny man Mr Ibu below:
One of your daughters is named Chelsea, what’s special about Chelsea Football Club?
(Laughter) If it is not Chelsea…, I can show you a picture I took with a Chelsea player; that is to show you how I’m soaked into Chelsea affair. I love Chelsea with my last blood, talking sports-wise. I was a national coach for AGN for four years. I gave my daughter the name Chelsea to keep the memory of Chelsea in mind. And I dedicate this baby to Chelsea Football Club, and she’s very beautiful.
The current trend is for Nigerian entertainers to go into politics, is Mr Ibu thinking in this direction?
I am not a politician, I’m a comedian, movie actor; all I do is to make sure everybody is happy. The only way I might come into politics is, if maybe my governor says John Okafor, please come back home we want to give you this local government as caretaker committee chairman. Apart from that, I don’t think I can enter politics. But that does not mean I cannot support anybody. I can support somebody that is doing well, I don’t normally go to campaign rallies, but anybody I like I can always support him.
Few years ago, you joined the bandwagon of actors cashing in on their fame to become singers, but like most of them, after one album, we are no longer hearing of Mr Ibu the singer, what is happening to your singing career?
The fact is that I’m a comedian and anywhere I find comedy I go there. I sang comedy music and I’ve just made one again, the third, and very soon it will hit the market. I don’t want to give it to MTN. I’m going to location to shoot the musical video, and after editing it, it will hit TV houses, they will see that Ibu is out again. Then, the interested marketers would buy and sell the way they sell movies.
How about the previous ones, how was the acceptance in the market?
The effect was fine, we caught some pirates and they apologised, we punished and let them go.
Can you share some of your challenges in the course of your career?
I cannot go to nightclubs, it is the biggest challenge I have, because I cannot smoke cigarette, I have never smoked in my life and I will never. I don’t take alcohol, I have never beaten a woman in my life. I don’t raise my hand over a woman. Talk about building a family, it was tough. That topic will wait for another day.
