Tragedy in Lagos: Dr. Vwaere Diaso’s Fatal Elevator Accident Spurs Government Action and Demands for Accountability

Nigerian Doctor Killed In Elevator Crash At Odan Lagos General Hospital… RIP Vwaere Diaso

In a shocking development, the Lagos State Government disclosed comprehensive details of the tragic elevator accident at the General Hospital, Odan, Lagos Island. The incident, which occurred last Tuesday, led to the untimely death of Dr. Vwaere Diaso, who was planning to travel abroad.

Olumide Sogunle, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Information and Strategy, in an official statement on Sunday, explained that the revelation emerged from the findings of an inquiry panel. This panel, established post-incident, was mandated to investigate the root causes of the calamity.

Highlighting the timeline of the unfortunate event, Sogunle shared that the elevator suffered a catastrophic malfunction at 6:50 pm, with the fall causing significant damage to the elevator doors. This required personnel to force them open in an attempt to rescue the entrapped Dr. Diaso. After a tense hour-long effort, she was finally extracted at approximately 7:50 pm, and the medical team sprang into action.

The statement shed light on the immediate aftermath, recounting, “Once Dr. Diaso was extracted, our medical team, spearheaded by a renowned consultant orthopaedic and trauma surgeon, promptly began resuscitation efforts. Our goal was clear – ensure unobstructed airway, sustain breathing, and facilitate circulation.”

Despite the commendable dedication of the medical team, which also included two consultant anaesthetists and the hospital’s Medical Director, the doctor’s situation worsened. Regrettably, she ceased breathing at 8:13 pm. A relentless Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation was administered until the tragic confirmation of her passing at 8:59 pm.

The state government took the opportunity to address circulating rumors, emphasizing that no request for blood had been initiated at the time of the CPR. Contrary to speculations, there was no shortage of blood. Sogunle remarked, “We boast a robust network of blood screening centers, and we maintain a register of voluntary donors ready to be mobilized at a moment’s notice.”

Sogunle’s statement also focused on the elevator itself, revealing it was a brand-new installation from 2021. He highlighted that elevator specialists from the Lagos Safety Commission initiated a preliminary inspection and planned to conduct a thorough mechanical assessment of the faulty elevator. This crucial examination will ascertain why the installed safety measures failed to prevent the tragic incident. The results will indicate if there might be potential legal consequences for the elevator installation company.

In the wake of this grievous accident, the Lagos State Government has announced decisive actions. The General Manager of the Lagos State Infrastructure and Asset Management Agency has been suspended with immediate effect. Furthermore, the facility managers associated with the incident have not only been dismissed but also added to a blacklist.

The tragic loss of Dr. Vwaere Diaso has sent shockwaves throughout the community, casting a spotlight on the safety of public infrastructure and leading to a demand for accountability. This incident stands as a somber reminder of the importance of safety and maintenance in public facilities.
