President Bola Tinubu Affirms Removal of Fuel Subsidy, Emphasizes Nigeria’s Sovereignty and Economic Stability

In a meeting with traditional rulers under the National Council of Traditional Rulers of Nigeria, President Bola Tinubu expressed his support for the removal of fuel subsidy, stating that Nigeria could no longer afford to sustain smugglers at the expense of its own citizens. The President highlighted the detrimental impact of the subsidy on the country’s finances and stressed the need to prioritize Nigeria’s economic growth and stability.

During the interactive session, President Tinubu expressed his gratitude to the traditional rulers for their attention and engagement with the issue of subsidy removal. He questioned the logic of providing financial benefits to neighboring countries through fuel smuggling while Nigeria struggled to pay salaries and harness its economic potential. He emphasized the need for fiscal responsibility and stated, “The elephant that was going to bring Nigeria to its knees is the subsidy. A country that cannot pay salaries and we say we have potential to encourage ourselves. I think we did the right thing.”

President Tinubu urged the traditional rulers to instill confidence in the Nigerian people and reassure them that the decision to remove the fuel subsidy would eventually lead to lower pump prices. He reaffirmed his commitment to an open-door policy, assuring the traditional leaders that their concerns and suggestions would be taken into consideration. The President acknowledged that while the government might not always be perfect in its decision-making, it would strive to make the right choices for the betterment of the country.

He pledged to prioritize national security, ensuring that every Nigerian could sleep peacefully without fear. He condemned the activities of a small percentage of individuals involved in crude oil theft in the Niger Delta region and vowed to combat such sabotage. The President emphasized the importance of utilizing the country’s diverse resources for prosperity, growth, and stability.

In response to the concerns raised by the traditional rulers regarding the challenges facing the nation, President Tinubu reassured them, stating, “Worry not because the country is in good hands.” He also spoke about the leadership of the 10th National Assembly, encouraging the traditional rulers to counsel aspiring politicians on managing their ambitions and fostering harmony within the legislative house. The President affirmed his willingness to work with any elected representative who is committed to the progress of the country.

The Chairman of the National Council of Traditional Rulers of Nigeria, Alhaji Saad Abubakar, representing the six geo-political zones, pledged their support and loyalty to President Tinubu. He assured the President of the traditional rulers’ unwavering prayers and commitment to contributing to the country’s development under his Renewed Hope agenda. The Co-Chairman and Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, expressed delight at Nigeria’s unity and resilience in the face of challenges. He urged President Tinubu to recognize the influence and reach of traditional rulers in complementing the government’s programs and visions.

As President Bola Tinubu continues to lead Nigeria, the nation looks forward to witnessing the implementation of his policies and the realization of his vision for a prosperous and united country. The support and collaboration between the government and traditional rulers serve as a symbol of hope and unity for all Nigerians.
