Tragic Collision On Lagos-Ibadan Expressway Claims Two Lives, Injures Ten

On Friday, 10th November 2023, a tragic accident occurred on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway near the Kara area, resulting in the death of two individuals and injuries to ten others. The incident involved a collision between a white Mazda bus, with registration number XV945EPE, and a white and blue Howo Sino Truck, which was unregistered.

Florence Okpe, the spokesperson for the Ogun State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), provided details about the crash in a statement to the press. According to the report, the crash involved a total of 14 people. Tragically, two of these individuals lost their lives at the scene, while ten others suffered varying degrees of injuries. Two people were fortunate to escape the incident unharmed.

Okpe attributed the cause of the crash primarily to “route violation and dangerous driving.” This unfortunate incident once again highlights the dangers of flouting traffic rules and reckless driving behavior on Nigeria’s roads.

In the wake of the accident, emergency response teams were quick to act. The injured victims were promptly taken to Famobis Hospital to receive necessary medical attention. Meanwhile, the bodies of the deceased were moved to Idera mortuary, respecting the necessary protocols in such tragic circumstances.

In response to the incident, the Ogun State Sector Commander of the FRSC, Anthony Uga, issued a statement urging drivers to strictly adhere to traffic regulations. He emphasized the importance of avoiding driving against traffic, commonly known as ‘one way,’ and urged drivers to exercise caution. Uga’s message was clear: reckless driving not only endangers the lives of the drivers but also poses a significant risk to other road users.

Commander Uga reiterated the commitment of the FRSC to fostering a safer driving environment across Nigeria. He called for the cooperation of everyone, from individual drivers to larger organizations, to help reduce the frequency and severity of road crashes. His statement underlined the collective responsibility of all road users in ensuring safety and preventing such tragic occurrences.

The aftermath of the crash has brought grief and sorrow to the families and friends of those involved. It serves as a stark reminder of the potential consequences of negligent driving and the need for strict adherence to road safety regulations. The FRSC continues its efforts to educate drivers and enforce road safety laws, striving for a future where such incidents are significantly reduced, if not entirely prevented.
