July 17, 2016 – Dietitians Urge Nigerians To Eat Ofada Rice To Reduce Cholesterol & Cure Diabetes

2 dietitians yesterday in Lagos advised Nigerians to eat more of ‘ofada’ rice than polished rice because of its immense health benefits.

They told the News Agency of Nigeria in separate interviews that ofada rice reduces cholesterol and also very good for people with diabetes.

NAN reports that ‘ofada’ rice is local rice produced in Nigeria; it is short and has brown stripes; it is cultivated without chemicals, and mostly planted in some parts of the country.

Mr Olusola Malomo, a dietician, who works at Massey Hospital in Lagos, said that ofada rice contains some vitamins, which has been polished and parboiled in processed rice.

“Ofada rice contains vitamins B6 and B12 which has been washed with chemicals in processed rice.

“It was also found that ofada rice contains more phosphorous and fibre, which help in the reduction of the risk of bowel disorder and fight constipation.

“Ofada rice has been linked to protection against atherosclerosis, ischemic stroke, diabetes, insulin resistance, obesity, and premature death,’’ he said.

Malomo also hinted that the local rice has additional nutrients and phytochemicals that reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases.

“This local rice when eaten regularly can also reduce risk of life threatening diseases.

“It also provides essential nutrients such as vitamin B, phosphorous, selenium, manganese, potassium, and magnesium.

“Selenium reduces the likelihood of colon cancer, magnesium keeps the bone healthy, it also contains insoluble fibre which help reduces risk of gall stones, and help maintains normal body weight.

“Although we have been preaching about the health benefits of this local rice for years, we will still continue to inform people of its immense health benefit,’’ he said.

Another dietician, Mr Olu Cole, who works at Rains Hospital in Lagos said that ofada rice has more health benefits to human.

“This rice has cholesterol-lowering effects include polyunsaturated fatty acids and important dietary sources of water-soluble, fat-soluble, and insoluble antioxidants.

“Many people did not know that the unpolished rice has more health benefits than the polished rice.

“Although it is very expensive in our local markets but we still urge people to try and eat this rice.

“Eating this rice will ward off diseases in our system, if we say that it is expensive, when we fall sick, we will still use our money to buy expensive drugs.

“Cole said that people should imbibe the culture of eating the rice so as live healthier,’’ he said.

Both dieticians, however, urged government at all levels to help local farmers with funds so as to boost local rice production.

  1. BECAUSE A BAG OF FOREIGN RICE IS NOW N17000, OKADA RICE OR OFADA WHAT EVER YOU CALL IT HAS BECOME MEDICINE THAT CURES!! LOOK AT HOW THE RICE SEEDS ARE BIG LIKE BEANS. WHERE HAS THIS RICE BEEN SINCE! OH GOD HELP US WE ARE NOW EATING OFADA RICE….

  2. But seriously, if the Lord will prepare a table for you with this kind of Rice tantalistically arranged like this in the presence of your enemies, they (your enemies) will not wait for your invitation before they join you at table. *wink.

    I take a stroll…

  3. mr RAPPPO don’t think like that… ofada rice is natural and nutritious unlike the so called foreign rice 🌾 that has passed through many process of preservation that are hygienic for the body

  4. Ofada rice is very sweet, but abeg d rice get wahala to prepare that’s why people don’t usually go for it, if u don’t knw hw to seive it u might not like d outcome, unless its been processed and packed well before sellg then I don’t mind eatg it over and over again.

  5. This is real honest to goodness Naija product indeed if it cures everything from cancer to diabetes to dumbness. African medicines never cure merely one disease. People should desist from misleading the public. My understanding of this write up is not of any curative qualities but rather that this rice is less harmful to the system should diabetic patients eat same.
People should not be made to belief it cures if it does not.

  6. This is a wake up call for those who are still ignorant about processed food that constitute harm to our health. I’m traditionalist, I believe more on our traditional foods because they contain natural nutrients which are less harmful to our health system than Arrozo or uncle Benz rice. The dieticians who divulged this information were absolutely correct. Ofada Rice has more nutritional benefits than imported Rice. Our dependency on foreign rice contribute much to our health deficient. Apart from keeping them in Silo for a long period of time, the preservative chemical that were used to preserve them play a major role in modern diseases. I love Ofada rice than other imported rice because it is low carbohydrate that slowly absorb through your system and you can easily full by eating small quantity. The imported Rice has some addiction that make you eat a lot because of its sweetness and that can cause diabetes. Consuming too much of rice can cause diabetes or tendency to cause diabetes in some people who have element of becoming diabetic. When White people eat rice, they eat small quantity like one cooking spoon mix with vegetables and other proteins, that is balancing your diet. Our problem as a Country is our inability to expand on our traditional food by initiating a special packaging and introducing to the rest of the World. Ofada Rice may not cure some disease like Cancer or Diabetes but it can prevent you from developing such diseases and regulate your carb.
