May 16, 2017 – Lagos Teacher Who Thought She Had Ulcer Diagnosed With Stomach Cancer At LUTH…Serah Osauohien Begs For Donation

Miss Serah Osauohien, a 25-year-old primary school teacher has appealed to Nigerians to help her raise N10 million for cancer treatment. Osauohien was teaching at Holy Trinity Nursery and Primary School at Agbado before she was diagnosed with cancer of the stomach.

According to her, she was first treated of ulcer for months at Mat Bell Hospital, Ikotun, before she was properly diagnosed at Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH).

She said: “It all started in April 2015. I noticed that I was stooling like three times daily; then it graduated to 10 times daily.

I started losing weight; I was formerly 85kg, now I’m 44.3kg. That was when I went to Mat Bell Hospital at Ikotun, where they told me I was having ulcer. After taking ulcer treatment for seven months without any improvement, I was taken to the village to seek spiritual help, taken to church but all to no avail until November 2016 when I went to LUTH.”

Osauohien added that after being examined in November by Dr Ajibawo in the Family Health Department at LUTH, she was asked to go for colonoscopy test, which would cost N50,000.

But because she had no fund at the moment, she delayed the test till January, when she was rushed to the hospital as she was bleeding profusely before she did the test.

After doing the test, Doctor Adedapo Osinowo confirmed that she had a tumour in her rectum and admitted her for immediate surgery, which cost N500,000. According to her, Osinowo had to stand in for her, before the surgery could be carried out.

A colostomy bag was placed in her stomach so that she could stool through it. But to remove put her intestines back to their normal function and stop the cancer from spreading, she has to go through chemotherapy, radiotherapy and a surgery to take out the colostomy bag. Osinowo also introduced Osauohien to a cancer foundation, NIOLA Cancer Foundation, which the doctor is part of.

The foundation has so far raised N299,000 out of the N10 m required for Osauohien’s treatment. Her mother, Mrs. Patience Osauohien, was in tears when she brought Serah to New Telegraph office.

She said: “It is just so sad; Serah had to take injection before coming here. I’m very sad.”

Also, the founder of NIOLA Cancer Foundation, Eniola Salu Akintunde, urged wellmeaning Nigerians to assist Serah. Those who want to assist can contact Osauohien’s family on 08089945045, money can be sent into Guarantee Trust Bank account number 0238535081, opened in the name of Osemeke Esther Osaseyi.
