April 23, 2014 – Mistaken For Kidnapper, Tenants Killed LandLord’s Son Who Just Returned To Nigeria After 24 Years In Lagos

This is a very emotional story of a Nigerian man who just returned to Nigeria from Guinea Bissau after 24 years.

Tolulope Olajuwape who looked suspicious to his father’s tenants because of his dreadlocks was lynched and beaten to death after they accused him of being a kidnapper.

Before his death, he reportedly ran to another house where his late mother used to live and knocked but nobody came to his rescue.

This is how Punch reported the story:

Some tenants and members of the Odua People’s Congress have lynched a 41-year-old man in the Ajelogo area of Mile 12, Lagos State.

Tolulope Olajuwape, was beaten to death by residents of Fasanya Street near his father’s house after being wrongly accused of being a kidnapper. An unidentified woman was said to have raised a false alarm, after which Olajuwape was beaten to death.

The elder sister of the deceased, Mrs. Oluwakemi Adesanya said that her brother had been away from Nigeria for many years. She said on the fateful day, the deceased had gone to the area to visit their mother, who he did not know was dead.
She said,

“My brother has been away from Nigeria for about 24 years. He spent five years in Sierra Leone while he has spent the last 19 years in Guinea Bissau. However, four years ago, he came briefly to Nigeria and we discussed how we were going to renovate our late father’s house on Fasanya Street and let it out.We begged him to stay in Nigeria, but he refused. After he returned to Guinea Bissau, we lost touch because he lost his phone and my elder brother, who had his phone number, had misplaced his own phone as well. So, when our mother died over a year ago, Tolulope did not even know.On April 9, 2014, I received a phone call from one of my elder brothers in Kaduna, who told me that he heard that Tolulope was in Nigeria and was being beaten up near our father’s house. It was quite late in the evening and I was very far away, so I could not do anything that night.”
Adesanya said the following morning, she visited the area where she was informed that a suspected kidnapper had been lynched. The matter was then reported at the Mile 12 Police Post after which investigations began.

Adesanya said,
“My aunt told me that my brother had gone to my father’s house around 7pm and did not like the condition of the house. He went inside the house and threatened to evict some people, but none of the tenants knew him because the house had been given to a developer.Maybe because my brother was on dreadlocks, he looked suspicious to them. I learnt that a woman raised the alarm and accused him of being a kidnapper and a thief. People immediately gathered around him and one OPC man descended on my brother. My brother ran to the next street – Fadare Street – where my mother’s house was situated.

He entered the house and started knocking on doors, shouting ‘Iya Kemi e gba mi’ (Iya Kemi, help me). He did not know that Iya Kemi, our mother, was deceased and the house had been rented out.”

It was learnt that the irate mob traced Olajuwape to the house and tortured him for about four hours. The developer of the said property was said to have called the tenants of the house on the telephone to inform them that the person being lynched was indeed the landlord’s son, but by then it was already too late.

After killing him, his corpse was thrown into the main road and was crushed by oncoming vehicles.

“After killing my brother, someone explained to them that he was indeed the landlord’s son. When the mob noticed that they had made a mistake, they threw my brother’s corpse into the main road so that it would be crushed beyond recognition,”
Adesanya said while fighting back tears.Adesanya wondered how the lynching took place without the knowledge of the police despite the fact that the scene of the incident was just two streets away from the Mile 12 Police Post. When our correspondent visited the house on Fasanya Street, all the rooms were locked and the house was deserted.

However, it was learnt that some of the tenants, including the woman who raised the false alarm, had been arrested.A landlord on Fadare Street, who spoke to our correspondent on the condition of anonymity, said many of them could not do anything to save the victim.

He said,  “As you can see, I am very old and I have lost my sight. I knew the victim’s mother, Iya Kemi. I heard when somebody was shouting Iya Kemi’s name for help, but I cannot even walk without being aided.

It was later in the morning that I was informed that it was her son that was killed. Before her death, Iya Kemi used to cry that she missed her son, Tolu. It is unfortunate what happened.”

Here is what is left of him……. HOW SAD

Viewers discretion STRONGLY ADVISED.

So sad and bitter that this guy spent a long time in a foreign land without any problem, took the transportation that got him to Nigeria still no problem while travelling only to get to his own father’s land and house and got killed by his own people like a sick bird. Rest in peace Tolulope.

please put a stop to this madness called jungle justices,we are not animals, such behaviour should be seen in animal kingdoms not here, and in 2014 when dogs that lives with human is well behaved not to talk of we humans.I hope the voluntary self made soldiers that carried out the jungle justices face the supposed punishment for this crime for others to learn.

Pls, let police make sure dt all d people involved be beating to death too, so dt others can learn frm dt. If u knw dt wen u kill sombody u will be killed to pay for it,u will nt want to be invole. Is as simply as dat. Bcos if is boko-haram dey see on d streat lik dis dey will nt kill him, dey will nt even be able to call police for him. We leave boko-haram isue to police alone bt dey can take other justice in their hands. Rubish

W-H-A-T? Hw did they tink dat a kidnapper wld just come in2 a house wt such confidence n authority n even threatn some of dem wt eviction if he doesn‘t hv any strong connectn wt d owner of the house?
Maybe it was d threat of possible eviction dat got dem infuriated 2 pounce on him.

If i hv my way, i wld hv d woman dat raised d alarm thrown in2 life inprisonment tho dat cannot right d wrong alrdy done. And as 4 d rest who contributed in d killn, i wld temper justice wt mercy coz they wldn‘t hv done wat they did had d 1st woman nt raised a false alarm in d 1st place, so 4 dat, they wld hv 2 pay just a token fine of N10M each or equally face life inprisonment.

The story of Ejigbo pepper sodomy is still very much in our mind. The brutal killing of 4 university of Port Harcourt students still burning. But why?do you think we have government?the killing in the North is still very much there.U av KILLED him, then restore his life back.If they can, which they can never do,those behind it should be killed. It is there in the Bible and Qur’an.Pl z don’t spare them, cos they will go in boost that they did it and go free.It is truly painful. What a crazy world.

Human beings are inherently wicked especially my people wey illiteracy don kill finish. How can you treat a human being like an animal. The good thing in life is that death is inevitable for everyone. Those people involved in killing this young man will find their own miserable end soon. How can naija ever be free when the blood of innocent people are shed every day on our street? May the soul of this young man not find rest but trouble each and everyone who participated in killing him. I rest my case. May God have mercy on my family and I as we are innocent of any crime committed in that country called Nigeria. How long will this barbaric act continue, not up to 3 years, the life of 4 young man were cut short without any meaningful investigation completed to determine who the culprits are. may God help us.

First of as a Nigerian who has been away for thirty years reading a story like that is part of the reasons i don’t visit often, plus the fact that Nigeria is a lawless country and full of thieves. It is such a shame when even here in the united states where i have been for over 25 years sometimes am ashamed to say am originally from Nigeria. Oga fun wa ni Nigeria o
