Meet 2017’s scandal stars in Nigeria. These celebrities dominated the social media this year for not so good reasons.
Here is a list compiled by Lanre Odukoya who takes cursory look at the messy happenings in Naija entertainment industry in 2017.
Peter & Paul Okoye, PSquare’s Split
The Nigerian singing twin brothers, Peter and Paul Okoye popularly known as Psquare finally went their separate ways after an enduring bickering.
The issue was disclosed by Peter after the Snapchat video he posted revealing that he has now gone solo with the Stage name Mr. P. He said: “My name is Mr. P. As from today, guess what? It’s show time, I’m about to go on stage,”Peter said. This was what he said at the show he performed at Philadelphia without his twin brother, Paul.
On his part, Paul revealed his own side of the story via social media with their personal family issues and what caused the beef. Peter once said Paul was showing unsolicited concerns about matters of his life. Paul would later refer to Peter’s wife Lola with a meme that reads: “Only a woman can come where there’s peace and destroy it.
Try me this time, I swear Nyash go open. You will know that blood is thicker and stronger than juju.”
The Okoye brothers have been battling with the social media beef until Peter disclosed that he wanted a termination letter from the musical group and ended contracts with Paul his business partner and their elder brother, Jude, whom he accused of threatening to kill him and his wife.
Peter insisted that he had enough of the drama and wanted the joint business to end. Peter stated that he loves his brothers and their families, and he wishes them the very best in their careers. However, he cannot betray his wife and kids as they are very important to him.
Nollywood Actress Tonto Dikeh Marriage Crash And Dowry Refund
Popular Nollywood actress, Tonto Dikeh, was finally proven wrong by her father when he returned the bride price to his former in-law, Churchill Olakunle’s family.
Sunny Dikeh disclosed that Olakunle Churchill, his estranged son-in-law fulfilled all the traditional rites needed including paying the bride price which was rightly performed. He also confirmed the bride price refund which stands as an annulment of their traditional marriage.
This was to counter the video the star actress posted saying she paid her bride price herself and also celebrating the final dissolution between her and her estranged husband Churchill. This made Churchill post the video of how the bride price refund took place which had the presence of both family members.
Dikeh replied to the reaction of fans who accused her of lying about the payment of her bride price on twitte, saying: “All those insulting Tonto because Tonto’s family were seen refunding Tonto’s bride price to Churchill lack common sense, I’m afraid. Why would anyone jump to a conclusion that she lied that money used in paying her bride price is hers just because it’s been refunded to Churchill’s family? So, do you think both Tonto and Churchill were going to tell their families when they were getting married that the money for the bride price was hers and not his?
In response, Dikeh wrote: “Honey don’t worry your head too much; we know the truth. For formality and respect a token has to be returned to them no matter what. The truth may be silent for a while but it sure can’t hide for long, You need not address this issue. I asked for a divorce, I was denied for months but God worked it out and I got it.”
Black Face Vs 2Face
Early this year, there was a widely reported beef between the Tuface and Blackface who were former members of the defunct Plantashun Boiz. Blackface has, over the years, alleged that Tuface appropriated award-winning song, African Queen, claiming that he was the original composer of the song that pushed the latter to limelight.
Daddy Showkey, a very concerned artiste of that era waded in by admonishing Blackface, to stop his age-long fight with singer Tuface Idibia. Alongside Faze, Tuface and Blackface were members of Plantashun Boiz.
Also in a recent interview, Blackface derided the lyrics of many Nigerian musicians, including Tuface.
While Tuface had earlier fought back through an online post, saying Blackface should leave him alone and rather practise what he preached, Showkey asked Blackface to stop ranting like a kid and work on his craft.
Mercy Aigbe Marriage Crash & Domestic Abuse Case
Actress, Mercy Aigbe and her husband, Lanre Gentry, were once an enviable pair until when the lady accused her husband of pummeling and verbally abusing her. She claimed to have endured physical assault for too long and her account of the saga particularly upon the release of a photograph showing her bruised and swollen face, she courted public sympathy.
Gentry was apprehended and detained but was released after signing an undertaken that he would keep a reasonable distance from the actress.
Thereafter, Gentry accused the government of complicity in his marital woe. While he expressed desire to have his wife back, Aigbe’s body language suggested she was done with the marriage that produced her second child (and only boy), Juwon. Their drama still resonates with showbiz buffs till date.
Davido’s Indictment In Tagbo Umeike’s death
Famous singer, Davido, who has had a great career year in 2017 almost marred it with his alleged indictment in the death of his friend, Tagbo.
Tagbo had one shot of Tequila too many the night of his birthday in a club in Lagos where they’d gone to celebrate. Reports have it that there was a bet to reward whoever drank the highest volume of liquor with iPhone 8 and N200,000 cash prize. Tagbo allegedly gulped over 30 shots of Tequila in a few hours. He died after the binge and Davido was alleged to have been the brain behind the dumping of Tagbo’s corpse at the Lagos State General Hospital.
He was invited to the office of the Commissioner of Police and arrests were also made to unravel the death from which the singer pleadedß innocent. The matter is still under investigation till date and it was one of the most tempestuous time of the year in Nigerian showbiz.
Burna Boy’s Robbery Case
Nigerian dancehall star, Damini Ogulu popularly known as Burna Boy, finally surrendered after he was declared wanted by the Lagos State Police Command for two months.
The singer reported to the command’s headquarters in Ikeja recently to tell his own side of the story as well as address the allegations of his involvement in a robbery attack on a fellow artiste, Mr .2kay.
He was subsequently arrested, interrogated and detained and was charged to court, but granted bail.
Speaking shortly after the interrogation, the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Imohimi Edgal, said the command had zero tolerance for all forms of crime and would not hesitate to prosecute anyone found culpable in any criminal offence perpetrated in the state.
The police chief said: “There would be no sacred cows.
This command is poised to ensure that residents can feel safe wherever they are and carry out their businesses without fear or favour.
Anyone therefore found to be involved in this case would be made to face the law to clear his or her name or face prosecution.”
The police in a statement sent to journalists did not say they were detaining the musician, an indication which implied that he was released after questioning.
The dancehall act was declared wanted by the Lagos police command in connection with the robbery attack on another popular musician, Mr. 2kay, at Eko Hotel and Suites in October.
Tunmise Omotore, the gang leader of the suspected robbers, had confessed how they disguised as room service personnel to rob Mr. 2kay at Eko Hotel and Suites. Omotore said they acted on the instruction of Burna Boy’s road manager, Joel Kantiock.
