My Nigerian Boyfriend Is Very Secretive – I’m Worried… What Should I Do?

Question: So I been dating my Nigerian bf/bd we have 2 kids he is very sneaky or secretive bout everything we have our own home our vechiles etc he served the Air Force of America he’s a US citizen so he don’t need me for a green card. I talk to his family they all know bout me but I don’t understand the secretive thing he does have PTSD. I don’t understand.

Relationships are complex, and it can be challenging to understand a partner’s behaviors and motivations. While I can’t provide specific insights into your boyfriend’s personal actions, I can offer some general considerations that might help you understand the situation better:

  1. Cultural Differences: Cultural backgrounds can influence how people perceive and engage in relationships. Nigerians may have different family, social, or individual dynamics that you might not be familiar with. For some people, keeping certain things private might be the norm due to their upbringing.
  2. Military Background: Serving in the military, especially in combat roles, can expose individuals to traumatic events. This trauma can sometimes lead to PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder) and other mental health issues. People with PTSD might isolate themselves, avoid certain situations, or be secretive about their feelings and experiences to protect their loved ones from the pain they’ve gone through.
  3. Individual Personality: Beyond cultural and military backgrounds, personal experiences and inherent personality traits can influence someone’s behavior. Some people are naturally more reserved or private about their lives.
  4. Trust and Vulnerability: Relationships require trust and vulnerability. If your boyfriend has been hurt or betrayed in the past, he might be guarding himself to prevent future pain. Building trust can take time, patience, and consistent effort from both partners.
  5. Communication: Open and honest communication is key in any relationship. Discuss your concerns with him, expressing how you feel about his secretive behavior and its impact on the relationship. It’s essential to approach this conversation with empathy and a desire to understand, rather than confront or accuse.
  6. Seek Professional Help: If you believe that his behavior is affecting your relationship negatively or if you’re concerned about his mental health, consider couples counseling or therapy. A professional can provide a safe space for both of you to communicate and offer tools to strengthen your relationship.

Remember, every individual and relationship is unique. It’s crucial to approach the situation with an open heart, patience, and understanding. Always prioritize your and your children’s safety and well-being. If at any point you feel that the secretive behavior is associated with potentially harmful actions, seek appropriate support or assistance.
