April 5, 2017 – How To Protect Yourself Against Meningitis & Stop It From Spreading…Common Symptoms To Watch Out For

In the wake of the viral Meningitis outbreak in Nigeria, a medical expert Doctor Ibrahim Yusuf has urged Nigerians to ensure good hygiene and sleep in well ventilated rooms to stop the spread of the disease.

Here is what Dr Ibrahim said in Hadejia area of Jigawa today.

“Meningitis typically begins with headache; nausea and vomiting, loss of consciousness, stiff neck, chills and fever.

“As the disease progresses, the patient becomes less rational, decrease the level of consciousness, and lapses into coma.

Mothers should bath their children and themselves at regular intervals and sleep in a well-ventilated rooms.

“Caregivers should give special attention to children to keep them healthy. It is also good to wash hands, fruits and vegetables before eating,’’ .

Other Ways To Prevent Yourself From Meningitis

Since the bacteria or viruses that cause Meningitis spread through coughing, kissing, sneezing, sharing cooking utensils, toothbrush or cigarette, these steps can help it from spreading:

  1. Wash your hands. Careful hand-washing helps prevent germs. Teach children to wash their hands often, especially before eating and after using the toilet, spending time in a crowded public place or petting animals. Show them how to vigorously and thoroughly wash and rinse their hands.
  2. Practice good hygiene. Don’t share drinks, foods, straws, eating utensils, lip balms or toothbrushes with anyone else. Teach children and teens to avoid sharing these items too.
  3. Maintain your immune system by getting enough rest, exercising regularly, and eating a healthy diet with plenty of fresh fruits, vegetables and whole grains.
  4. Cover your mouth. When you need to cough or sneeze, be sure to cover your mouth and nose.

If you experience any of the above symptoms please visit your doctor immediately.
