South African Policemen Arrested For Beating Nigerian Citizen To Coma
Meet the 3 of the 4 police men who allegedly beat a Nigerian citizen to the point of death.
According to Briefly Coza, the attack happened on the 9th of January 2023 when an unidentified Nigerian walking along with his South African friends was stopped and asked to reveal his identification document.
When the Nigerian could not produce an original copy of the document the officers demanded to see, they transported him to the Boksburg North Police Station and repeatedly beat him.
The victim was in a coma for nine days as a result of the heavy beating he suffered in the hands of the officers.
After receiving the information, the Nigerian Embassy in South Africa notified the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) unit of the incident.
The IPID investigated the matter and then arrested the officers involved on February 1.
According to Lizzy Suping, IPID spokesperson, the officers face charges of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm and defeating the ends of justice.
The arrested officers will make their first appearance in the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court on Friday the 3rd of February 2023.
