Tears As Pregnant Woman Attacked By 3 Police Officers In Lagos Loses Baby

July 25, 2015 – Tears As Pregnant Woman Attacked By Policemen In Lagos Loses Baby

“Take me to my son, I want to see him”, Chika Elekawachi pleaded with family members who were still lost in thought on how to break the news of the death of her baby. Chika is the eight-month pregnant woman who was allegedly brutalized by three policemen attached to the Satellite Police Division in Lagos on Sunday, July 19, 2015.

The cops allegedly stripped the woman naked after accusing her of resisting arrest. She was allegedly assaulted before she was dragged to the police station. Her family members later rushed her to Safe Hands Hospital, old Ojo road, Amuwo, Lagos, after she allegedly passed out at the police station.

Her family members got the shock of their lives when the doctor on duty said in the presence of policemen that Chika was hale and hearty. Unfortunately, she started bleeding at about 11pm on Monday when she was rushed into the theatre for surgery. Although the baby boy was delivered on Tuesday alive, and rushed to Outreach Hospital in Festac town, Lagos, which had a functional incubator, the baby died less than 48 hours after.

Her family members have cried out over what they described as an attempt by the police to sweep the matter under the carpet.

This is even as the Lagos police command had ordered the immediate arrest and detention of the suspects soon after the authorities learnt that the baby had died.

  1. Whatever we do in life, integrity matters most. Nigerians police has lost its integrity due to bribe they were collecting from the people they suppose to protect. It is not possible to command respect if you let the love of money and personal interest tangle between you and your job. My understanding of this issue is, the law enforcement accosted this young woman for interrogation for suspicious activities going on in that area but because the officers did not comport themselves in a lawful manner gave that woman to curse them out and refused to co-operate with them. In a situation like this, not only in Nigeria but anywhere in this planet the police always want to be in control as part of their training. Once they realize they are loosing command, they turn cruel and violent that’s exactly what happen in this woman’s case. However, due to inadequate training of our law enforcement officers, they have gone too far in this case. Apart from being an expectant mother and house wife, it is wrong for the officers to strip that woman naked publicly, that is the highest disgrace to womanhood. They should have handle that issue differently especially seeing that woman as a pregnant woman. They can even come after her when she might have given birth to her baby but now since the foetus has died, they are now having murder case hanging around their neck for lack of common sense and inefficiency in handling a case like this. In any developed Countries settling a case like this out of court will turn the young woman to wealthy individual because she will sue the entire police force for killing unborn child and assault to a expectant mother. According Nigeria justice system it may take forever to get justice for this young woman what a primitive justice system?.

  2. Dis act alone shows dat dey are not just illeterats but dey are animals, beast, wicked men. How sure is one dat dey ve a child of their own, dey dnt know how it feels for a woman to b pregnant and expecting her child in a month time. I hope dat dis case will not just die bcos dat dead child is deprived of staying with his family and need JUSTICE . Those policemen can never go unpunished in God’s hand and d innocent blood also is on dem.
