Tribalism Is Killing Nollywood, We Don’t Love Each Other – Ronke Ojo

In this recent interview with Abiola Alaba Peter, Nollywood actress cum musician Ronke Ojo aka Oshodi Oke talked extensively about the only problem ravaging the Nollywood movie industry.

The beautiful mother of two said Nollywood stars do not really love each other because of their tribal differences.

See excerpts:

Abiola Alaba Peter: What are the modern day challenges confronting movie industry in Nigeria?

Ronke Ojo: The number one challenge we have is tribalism, yes, coupled with not being under one umbrella.

“I tell people, Americans love their country, that’s why they love themselves. Of course, they’ve got shortcomings as well but you won’t really see it the way you see it here in Nigeria.

This tribalism of a thing is actually our number one problem. A Yoruba man would not want to call an Igbo man to act in a movie and same with the Igbo people.

Especially we women; you know that person is your colleague and you will be giving her attitude. All these things to me are childish. That’s one thing about me, if I see any good actress, I approach her and compliment her.

When I come across some upcoming actresses that are good, I go to them and tell them that I am their fan. I’m a very blunt person, but I don’t know what our problem is in this industry.

Tribalism has really eaten deep into this industry. Even if I’m not on talking term with a particular person and I have a script and I see that the person is fit for the role, believe me, I will call the person to come in. It’s got nothing to do with our relationship, but I don’t know what our problem is.

So tribalism is our major problem in Nollywood; especially If we are not under one umbrella.”

So all the encomium they shower on each other on the social media na wash…

Too bad. Hatred will take them nowhere.

  1. That is just the truth, and Nollywood is a microcosm of Nigeria. This is not how people behave that are one.

  2. yes tribalism is really killing Nollywood and its caused by ******, the ****** are very tribalism in everything. the even export it every country they go to.

  3. I hv heard abt dsame issue 4rm anoda actress who claims dat tribalism is a major problem in d industry.

When on earth shall we realise dat we re all dsame as one nigeria, showing altitude to one anoda won’t take us any where..it’s only unity and love dat can bring a positive massive change and progress.
Well spoken frm her and i wish other actress can see frm dsame side as she does

  4. Thank you Ronke for saying the absolute truth. Tribalism is the main cause of Nigeria’s problems and that is why corruption will be very difficult to be wiped out in that country. One will see someone who is stealing the country blind but because that person is from his/her tribe will not report. Nigerian’s co-operate more outside the country than they do in Nigeria. It is shameful indeed. That also transforms into the polity. When ever it is election time a particular ex-head of state/president (Obasanjo) will come out to present somebody from the north as the choice for the presidency. They forgot their pact that it will be rotational among the tribes. Obasanjo and his cliques swore never to let Ibo man rule.

    • Didn’t Ibos own up Goodluck Jonathan as one of their sons and did all Ibos not rally behind him against other Presidential candidates.? The same Obasanjo you saught to defame made Ibos the most powerful cabinet ministers of his government. Why not remove your tribalistic lenses before accusing others of tribalism.

  5. Nollywood is just an expression of what Nigeria is at the moment. when it comes to the movie industry..you have two dominating factions * Yoruba’s and *Igbo’s, the other tribes are no where to be found.

  6. Ma Ronke, you are just right. That is exactly what is killing Nollywood and Niggeria as a whole. I have observed it myself.

  7. RONKE OSHODI ,YOU HV SPOKEN WELLA .THANX 4 TRUTH . UNA HEAR AM ? I THOT IT WAS EGBERRI MAMA 1 THAT IS A TRIBALIST, SO IT IS ALL OVER NIGERIA ?EVEN D ONES PRETENDING TO BE PATRIOTIC ARE WORSE BCOS THEY ARE TRIBALISTS IN THEIR WORKING AND BUSINESS PLACES. SOME PASTORS DON,T EVEN GIVE KEY OFFICES TO THOSE WHO AREN,T FROM THEIR TRIBE OR FAMILY .TRUTH WILL UNFOLD IT,SELF AS WE KEEP WATCHING.
