September 9, 2016 – Calabar King Orders Arrest Of Masquerades Caught Begging For Money

The Obong of Calabar, Ekpo Abasi-Otu V, has called on the Cross River Police Command to arrest any masquerade found along the streets of Calabar begging for money.

Abasi-Otu made the call on Thursday in Calabar during the formation of Eminent People’s Forum organised by the Commissioner of Police, Mr Jimoh Ozi-Obeh.

The Obong, who was represented by Etubom Bassey Duke, the Chairman of Etubom’s Traditional Rulers Council in the palace, said the call became necessary following series of negative complaints about some masquerades.

He said that the palace of the Obong had received several petitions that some people were hiding under the guise of `masquerade’ to extort money from innocent residents of the state.

“The palace of the Obong of Calabar has received several petitions about the wicked act of some masquerades in Calabar.

“Some of these people hide under the guise of masquerades to extort money from people. They also carry out heinous crimes while pretending to be spirits.

“We don’t permit masquerades to go about in the street begging for money unless it is a very big cultural event.
“I am calling on the police to arrest any masquerade found begging for money along the streets of Calabar,” he said.

  1. Is not bad its the tradition what do you think they came out for to make people laugh? Your joking man most chop ooo is not as if they beg for money when they come they chase people make people laugh and they give them money

  2. Well pleased with that new law in the state. That will make the useless souls, who engaged in such, stop bn a public nuisance.

  3. I think the best way to punish them when caught is to keep them behind bar whilst wearing all that their thick smelly regalias. They must not be allowed to pull it off. Even if they are going to spend a week or two in detention.

Am sure after that, they will never dream of masquerading and extorting money from innocent hard-working citizens again. Maybe till 2019.

    I take a stroll…

  4. I live in Calabar so let me tell you guys what’s going on. This masqurade they are talkin about comes out everyday, the same group of ugly lookin guys going on the street i mean everyday(Sunday Exclu) disturbin people especially around Watt Market and the environs. They stop me on Tuesday tellin me to give them anytin i have, i was so angry that i shouted on them to get out of my way. And trust market women they rain curses and abuses on them tellin them to go and find work. I mean its so annoying, so i like that its a welcome development.
