His mother, unable to cope, left him behind, entrusting his care to his grandmother. In a turn of events that reflects the desperation of their situation, his grandmother had to breastfeed him, despite his being beyond the typical age for breastfeeding.

The situation worsened when Charles’ father remarried. His new wife became a central figure in his life, often overshadowing young Charles’ needs. The actor vividly recalled a painful memory where his stepmother forced his father to make a heart-wrenching choice between her and his son. Torn between the two, his father ultimately chose his wife, driven by his marital and intimate commitments to her.

Charles described his stepmother as a figure who brought considerable misery into his life. His time living with his father was short-lived, lasting only about eight months. When Charles reached a pivotal moment in his life – gaining university admission at 20 – his stepmother’s influence again cast a shadow over his prospects. She persuaded his father not to support Charles’ education, suggesting he wait until her own child was old enough to attend university with him, despite a significant age gap.

Years later, when Charles finally reconnected with his biological mother, their relationship was strained and distant. The absence of emotional bonding in his formative years left a void that was difficult to fill. During their reunion, he recalled sitting with his father in a silence heavy with unspoken emotions, both of them shedding tears but unable to articulate their feelings.

In a poignant moment, Charles sought his father’s blessings for his first job. He presented his father with a drink and an envelope containing N5000, hoping for a prayer of support. However, his father, burdened by guilt for his past actions and inactions, refused to accept the gesture. He felt undeserving of offering blessings when he had not contributed to Charles’ upbringing.

Charles’ story is a testament to the resilience and strength that many face in overcoming personal adversities. His journey from a troubled childhood to becoming a notable figure in Nollywood is a narrative of overcoming the odds, driven by determination and an unyielding spirit.
