Oct 23, 2013 – Dino Melaye Arrested By Police For Protesting Stella Oduah’s BMW Cars Bribe In Abuja

Few hours ago, Naija activist and the founder of anti-corruption network Hon. Dino Melaye was arrested by Abuja police command over what they termed an illegal protest.

The activist and some members of his anti-corruption network were arrested today in Abuja while calling for the immediate resignation of aviation minister, Stella Oduah.

Stella Oduah got into a messy scandal after receiving 2 armoured BMW cars worth N255 million from an aviation agency.

Hon Dino Melaye, who led a group of protesters to the Federal Secretariat around noon on Tuesday was arrested by a group of policeman headed by an Assistant Commissioner of Police in the FCT, Sunday Olukoya.

Dino Melaye, an ex- House of Rep member is the ceo of the anti corruption organization based in Abuja.

Before his arrest, Melaye and his group had protested at the Federal Secretariat, Abuja with members of his group carrying different placards in which they condemned the Minister for allegedly asking the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority to buy her the two bullet-proof BMW cars.

However, another group also protested in support of the Minister. But while the pro-Oduah protesters were allowed to leave, Police stopped the vehicle conveying Melaye and his supporters and immediately put them under arrest.

The former member of House of Representatives however protested the arrest arguing that similar protests were organized when the police pension fund petrol subsidy fund were stolen.

Melaye said his group organized the protest against the Minister because the funds used to buy the armoured cars was not in the budget and not appropriated.

“The protest affects everybody; the police are also affected because they are taxpayers. I’m also a taxpayer.”

The Coalition Against Corrupt Leaders, CACOL, said Melaye’s arrest was highly reprehensible.

CACOL Executive Chairman, Debo Adeniran, described the action of the police as “leaving the message to fight the messenger”.

“Why should they leave the message to fight the messenger? It is like throwing the baby away with the bath water,” said Adeniran, who added: “When has it become an offence for any Nigerian to protest against what he feels is not right? That is a violation of the gentleman’s fundamental rights, which this set of our leaders swore an oath to protect.”

Adeniran said it is unfortunate that people who rode on the back of the rule of law to get to power could turn around to deny Nigerian masses basic rights.

The anti-corruption crusader however urged the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, to probe into the activities of the Aviation Minister for abuse of office; and also urged the agency to probe the activities of the all aviation agencies under Oduah.

Nigeria, a country without human right.

Why arrest people organizing a peaceful protest over their right.

Abi Nigerians no get right again?

Well, it may not necessarily be an order from Uncle Jona given the fact that Nigerian police may be acting on the instruction of a shallow minded overzealous politician or Oga at the top. But the point in the allegation that two group protested is :Why was Dipo’s group arrested and Oduah’s group allowed to go home? That calls for serious concerns and miscarriage of justice in our system. All over the world people have liberty to protest perceived misbehavior of public or elected office holder, therefore Princess Oduah’s case is not an exception. However Nigerians should exhibit some level of maturity and allow the law take its course by allowing the embattled minister make her case instead of crucifying her before getting to court! . More importantly, in a situation like this, the norm is for her to proceed on compulsory leave while the investigation lasted and if at the end she comes out clean then she resumes her job thus saving her and her family the embarrassment of forceful resignation and also the government from apologizing and compensating for injustice. Therefore, my fellow Nigerians, the key word is to be patient while the law takes its course. And if in the usual manner typical of Nigerian government this scandal is also swept under the carpet, so be it. I rest my case.

Why is the Police arresting Dino Melaye, they should arrest Stella Oduah, but not Dino. Dino has the fundamental right to protest and raise awareness to bad deed, he is not the culprit, Stella Oduah is the culprit. The money she is alleged to have lavished unnecessarily belongs to all Nigerians including the Police therefore Dino Melaye’s arrest is illegal and he and his colleagues should be released.

Dino Melaye actually deserve the humiliation he receive from the police.Who told him Stella Oduah is guilty. That is what he deserve for allowing himself to be deceived by tribalistic YORUBA PRESS. Always looking for means to victimise non yoruba ministers.

If you(senators, house of rep members, governors, lga chairmen, lawyers, judges, arm force men, president and all those in public or private offices) are not guilty of what stella did, be the first to cast the stone….
What so ever a man sowth that he shall reap also.
For me I believe she has missed it and she should quietly ask God forgiveness!!

he deserves to be arrested. An allegation was made, which has not been proven to be true and someone is out to protest, thereby defaming the character of the minister. Is it constitutional to send someone to jail, without a trial in a law court? Let’s just wait till she is found guilty, that’s how learned people, what of if after protesting,ODUAH came out clean in everything?? Then, apology begins to go back,it’s just awkward!

The so -called Onuorah peter and king O are all sick in the the brain for supporting an evil Character in the person of Stella Oduah. What a shame that our generation have been brainwashed with ethnic and religious sentiments. There is evidence of bullet proof car bought in the name of Stella yet you still need a proof before people like Dino should protest. I dont blame foolish idiotic individuals such as the so -called Peter Onuoha, King O and the likes for commenting awkwardly, as they need mentally rehabilitating home for help. Now back to the main issue the women to be jailed for 100 years. Why are Igbos could not be trusted with position of money? Patricia Eteh, the formal DG of immigration with her illegal recruitment saga, and now Stella. Money money money money shall lead all most Igbo men to hell. Hausa man would steal and remain, Yoruba man because of fear would involved so many person to steal along with him or her but Igbos! heh heh. May God deliver These generations from the scourge of these looters Amen.

I firmly believe Nigeria as a nation is rapidly going down valley of self destruct . And what more, Most Nigerians have become so morally bankrupt to a fault that affected their capacity to think straight. My point is this, a woman was alleged to have committed a crime which is yet to be confirmed or refuted by competent court of law yet people are trying to overlook the message and attack the messenger. This id the beginning of madness. However if the allegation is true, my question are: what’s her duty that require bullet proof vehicles? because there are many government functionaries that occupy very sensitive and dangerous positions than Aviation with no record of armored vehicles. Or how do we rate the IG of police (who’s chasing book haram all about), Dr Ngozi Iweala who coordinates the economy that these people are looting?
The point is there has to be an end to this one way or the other. Unfortunately, when a thief is caught pants down, he begins to look for excuse. Nobody or tribe is witch hunting anyone here because I see that as deliberate distraction strategy employed by intellectually deficient people who cannot reason logically or see the objectivity in the case at hand . During Obasanjo, Chief Sunday Awoniyi also a Yoruba man was investigated for corruption in handling the national ID card project- the man later died of humiliation form this issue. Same goes for former IG of police Tafa Balogun another Yoruba man charged for corruption .Femi falana and chief Gani fawehimi (both Yoruba men) were going to prosecute the man free of charge for EFCC. Sometime ago,Chief Bode George was sent to prison for similar offence even though it was called arrangee, because the man is still bitterly insisting that Lagos(a Yoruba controlled)state government orchestrated it. And of course, recently Dimeji Bankole the former speaker of the NAS was not only charged for corrupt practice on the whistle blowing of Femi Gbajabialmila a Yoruba Hon member, but the Yoruba ensured he never retuned to the house .We can go on and on because the list is endless .Therefore to people like King and Onuoah, princess Odauh should be allowed to carry her cross to the court and if she comes out clean that makes her a heroine and if otherwise, then let her go and cool her feet behind bars. And please let us leave tribal sentiments and naming calling out of serious national discourse affecting us as a people . I rest my case.

He should be arrested and jailed for life, this is what we call enemies of progress. What is 255m that a whole minister can’t afford to buy two cars, when common yahoo boy dey buy car worth 100m common wizkid buy car 15m, common iyayan buy car 30m, then what is common 255m that a whole minister of aviation can afford to buy a car, these enemies of progress are just stupid

@Yanky I was agreeing with you until you started talking about Igbo people not being trusted. that is just a bad statement. @Bezo the difference between the entertainers buying cars for 15M,30M or even 100M (yahoo boys) is that they are not civil servants, for lack of a better word they are business men who sell thier trade and work for their money(not counting the Yahoo boys They are committing a crime) besides her cars are worth five times the amount combined all the people you mentioned. Civil servants work for the people that is why anything she does that does not look right has to be questioned. If you get Shop where you put person to look after the shop for you, after a couple of months the person is driving a better car then you or a car you would have never even thought of buying you no go ask how far? We need to think people. A protest is just that asking questions how far no need to arrest the guy. What they shuld have done is address the issue he is protesting about simple
