Surge in Substance Abuse Among Nigerian Youths: A Growing Concern Says Health Specialist

The prevalent trend of drug misuse in Nigeria is alarmingly on the rise, particularly amongst the nation’s burgeoning youthful demographic. This distressing revelation comes from Dr. Oche Joseph Otorkpa, a renowned public health specialist and esteemed Fellow of the Royal Society for Public Health in the United Kingdom.

Dr. Otorkpa shared his insights into the escalating substance misuse crisis engulfing the young Nigerian populace, expressing grave concern over the increasingly widespread drug addiction. In his professional evaluation, several factors have spurred on the illicit drug trade in the country. He cited Nigeria’s strategic geographical position, stark economic inequality, rampant political instability, and the international clamor for narcotics as key contributors.

In an in-depth commentary, Dr. Otorkpa proposed comprehensive measures to curtail this unsettling rise. These include the importance of comprehensive education and focused research, fortification of law enforcement agencies, and investment in effective treatment and rehabilitation services, amongst other critical approaches.

The highly respected health expert’s remarks were as follows:

“In line with the data from the United Nations Population Fund, Nigeria’s demographic composition is predominantly youthful, with around 60% of the populace under the age of 30. This dynamic demographic segment forms a crucial part of the country’s labor force and holds significant potential to propel economic progress and development. However, an alarmingly increasing proportion of this group is becoming ensnared in the illicit web spun by drug traffickers.

The history of drug trafficking in Nigeria is complex and spans several decades. The country’s drug trade, in its illicit form, is fueled by a cocktail of factors, including Nigeria’s unique geographic placement, profound economic disparities, widespread political instability, and the global appetite for narcotics.

In recent years, the production of methamphetamine within Nigeria’s borders has escalated. Nigerian criminal networks have been implicated in the covert manufacture of methamphetamine, frequently employing makeshift laboratories and precursor chemicals often sourced from nations such as China.

Nigerian drug traffickers have developed sophisticated networks and partnerships with transnational criminal syndicates, like Latin American drug cartels and West African crime groups. This has opened the gateway for them to tap into a global market and exploit advanced smuggling strategies.

The staggering volumes of narcotics seized by the reenergized National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) from drug traffickers at Nigerian airports over the past couple of years provide a stark snapshot of the grim predicament confronting the young population in Nigeria.

These substantial confiscations over a relatively brief span underscore the pervasive and deep-rooted drug trade that poses a severe threat to the upcoming generation. The fallout from this grim scenario is manifested in the increasing numbers of young individuals grappling with addiction and dependency issues. Instead of pursuing their educational objectives and leveraging opportunities offered by academic institutions, these susceptible individuals are now finding themselves compelled to seek assistance and recovery in dedicated treatment facilities.

The crisis has escalated to such a level that educators are becoming patrons to youthful drug peddlers within their own educational establishments, while drug cartels have pervaded nightclubs and the entertainment industry. These criminal enterprises are instructing our young people on self-destruction techniques, profiting immensely from the desperation of helpless addicts.

We must not allow this grim trend to persist. Like many other nations, Nigeria must promptly confront and tackle the growing drug issue amongst its youthful population.

If this issue remains unaddressed, the country’s future will be severely jeopardized.”
