Fatal Road Accident In Kwara State Kills 10: Reckless Driving and Speed Violations at Fault

A calamitous vehicular accident transpired on Thursday along the Jebba-Bode Saadu-Ilorin Expressway in the Ile Pupa sector of Moro Local Government Area, Kwara State, Nigeria. This horrific incident resulted in the unfortunate death of no less than 10 individuals.

Through multiple sources, our correspondent collected information which pointed towards wrongful overtaking and violation of speed limits as the root causes of this devastating accident. City Round, an established news platform, reported that three separate vehicles were implicated in this catastrophic event, leading to the tragic loss of seven male adults, a single female adult, and two young female children.

A comprehensive statement released by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) the following day, Friday, provided additional details about the incident. The accident took place around 6:30 in the evening and a total of 17 people were involved in the incident, according to the FRSC’s first information report.

As per the report, a petroleum tanker, a Toyota Corolla driven by one Oladokun Waheed, and a Volkswagen Sharon minibus were the three vehicles caught in the disastrous chain of events. Each of these vehicles played a role in the accident, painting a grim picture of the events that led to such a large loss of life.

Frederick Ogidan, the FRSC Sector Commander, offered his insights on the occurrence, revealing that a cash amount of N60,750 was found and recovered at the accident scene. The funds were presumably belongings of the victims involved in the accident.

Ogidan also brought to light the fate of the survivors from the accident. He explained that those who were fortunate enough to survive suffered injuries of varying severity. These survivors were promptly transported to Shalom Hospital in Bode Saadu for necessary medical attention. In a more somber revelation, he shared that the bodies of the deceased were moved to the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital’s mortuary.

Expressing concern over the reckless driving behaviors that led to the accident, Ogidan offered advice to motorists. He urged them to demonstrate caution in their driving habits, particularly regarding their speed and manner of overtaking. Emphasizing the significance of such an accident, where ten lives were lost in a single incident, he made it clear that such a situation cannot be tolerated.

In response to the incident, the FRSC Kwara is set to initiate another enforcement drive focused on speed violation and overloading. The operation is scheduled to commence from Monday, July 17, 2023. Through such measures, the FRSC hopes to prevent future accidents and make the roads safer for all users. This unfortunate incident serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of speed violations and wrongful overtaking on the road.
