May 21st, 2016 – Georgina Onuoha: Why I Am Yet To Lose My Nigerian Accent After Over 10 Years In America

Check out Nollywood actress Georgina Onuoha’s candid response to a question Razzle Dazzle asked her earlier in the week:

RD: You’ve not lost your Nigerian accent unlike many after 10 years of sojourn abroad

Mr Onuoha: I’m a core Nigerian girl and this is my identity, maybe because I can relate with you and I understand how I should be speaking. If I was speaking to a Caucasian you might probably not understand the way I pronounce certain words.

There’s always an identity in Nigerians that you cannot lose. I went to the U.S. as an adult in my 20s and I’m going to be 40. There’s no way I would throw my identity away because I want to start sounding like an American.

Correct Naija pikin!

  4. Maybe they need to read a book called ” Do You Speak American”. America has diverse accents, in fact, is it around fifty. The most common one is the spoken in the east coast ( New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Maryland, Delaware and Pennsylvania) Down south, the agricultural folks are something else although. There is only one English language, and it is spoken mainly by the British; the rest are dialects.

  5. IT’S NOT FAKING IT OR LETTING GO YOUR IDENTITY FOR MOST PEOPLE MY DEAR, IT’S CALL ADAPTING TO YOUR SURROUNDING, I KNOW A NIGERIAN THAT HAS A LAW DEGREE AND HAVE LIVE IN THE UNITED STATES FOR MANY YEARS, HE CAN’T PRACTICE THE KIND OF LAW HE STUDIED IN A US COURT OF LAW BECAUSE HIS ACCENT IS STILL TOO TICK FOR ANYONE TO UNDERSTAND…
SO, THERE’S NOT WRONG TO ADAPT OR EVEN IMITATE YOUR SURROUNDING SOMETIME…
FOR EXAMPLE, IT’S ALWAYS VERY PAINFUL TO SEE GOODLUCK JONATHAN BEEN INTERVIEWED BY A FOREIGN JOURNALIST, I MYSELF, CAN HARDLY UNDERSTAND HIM…YOU DON’T HAVE TO SOUND LIKE ANYONE ELSE, BUT YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO PRONOUNCE YOUR WORDS CLEARLY AND LEARN TO MAKE A COHERENT SENTENCES OR STATEMENTS, WE STILL HAVE A LONG WAY TO GO IN THESE AREAS.

  6. Accents are often times put on because the person feels the other party cannot understand him or her. But under normal temperature and pressure a Nigerian is no ones ape.
Just be yourself and speak in a way you feel comfortable speaking as long as you are communicating with the person you address at any given time.
Phoney accents can be funny AND sometimes downright embarrassing, for example after a “been to” has rapped oyinbo language for a while to just show-off you find out that a simple word like”THREE” let’s him down and he pronounces same “TREE” which will not sound so odd if one was talking normally.
Ride on sister and be yourself!

  7. Come on guys it’s not about faking accent but if you have lived and studied abroad for over 10 years then naturally the way you speak has to change.
