August 18, 2016 – “It Is A Shame German Footballers Played Better Than Team Nigeria At Rio” – Siasia

The Head Coach of Dream Team VI, Samson Siasia, has admitted that the National team did not deserve to play in the finals of the ongoing Rio de Janeiro Olympic soccer games.

“I am disappointed; Even though we had glaring chances, we couldn’t score; we failed to utilise them. The German team did better. It is a shame.
“We did not have the right spirit for the game. Maybe most of them stayed up late and did not observe rest when they should.
“When you reach this level of the competition, you do not need anybody to teleguide you on how to conduct yourself to scale through.

They had the chances, am I going to get into the field of play to score for them?
“We are going to review the match and think of a strategy to win the third place match. That is what it has boiled down to. It is better than nothing.

“I am disappointed with the team; We did not play like people hungry to play in the finals at the famous Maracan Stadium,” Siasia said, a fact that his captain, John Mikel re-echoed , stressing, “we did not play well. We don’t deserve to be in the finals.

“In Saturday’s third place match against Honduras, we are professional players, hopefully, we can win a medal.”

The players, who were obviously distraught after a woeful performance that left many Nigerians in Sao Paulo disappointed, apparently took it out on the Nigerian journalists, who met them at mix zone, by shunning interaction.

Unlike their German counterparts that allowed their journalists to ask questions, the Nigerians simply worked past. We are not in the mood for questions,” they said.

“This is rather disrespectful,” Mitchell Obi, President of International Sports Press (AIPS-Africa) quipped.

The standard ethical practice the world over is to at least show some respect, or decently ask to be excused from interviews. That did not happen.

The National team lost 0-2 to Germany, the same 0-2 margin they lost to the Colombians within the same Corinthian Arena.

  1. I DO NOT think that this is how a coach should sound in an event like this. To tell the whole world that he is disappointed with the team is like calling himself a failure, and he is blithely oblivious of this. Consider somebody like Arsene Wenger, he has never made such an utterance in the public, even though he must have felt like that on several occasions. A seasoned coach should know the kind of disapproving words that, when made in the public, discourages his team instead of giving them a boost. This is not what will fire the team to defeat Honduras. In short, they may still lose out in the third place because of this. Nothing encourages a player like when he knows that his coach believes in him. Siasia has blundered here.

  2. @metu i do not think you watched the match everyone was disappointed not because they lost but because they played without the team spirit they played as if they were forced to..it was a woeful performance we least expected it from them.. i believe the coach said the right words as of the case of arsene wenger that you mentioned he can’t blame his squad because he is the root of the problem he as failed to make signings that will help booster the squad it is far different from that of the dream team

  3. Metu did you watch the match? If you didn’t then ********. I agree with Siasia on this one our players were shit, they diddn’t even know how to trap a ball especially that one called Sadiq. Now after watching them dismantle Denmark, what we saw against Germany was total embarrassment.

    • @CALEB, you should know how to express your divergent views without saying what would be replaced with asterisk. Otherwise you should lock up yourself in the world of your own where nobody would argue with you.

  4. Please as a Captain of dat team Mikel ddnt show dat on d field of play, his he plays to make name or wat?I watched d match and was dissatisfied cos wen Nigeria was 1 goal down he ought to av show commitment on d field. He plays defensive role in chelsea and playing attacking role exposing d defence.Dos guys at d defense re not experience and dats wat Germany capitalize on. No body to coordinate d defense at all.

  5. @CALEB, you should know how to express you divergent views without hauling insult on another person. You would not beat me to it if I should go down that road with you.

@HUCHENNA, nobody is happy with their performance. But whether you admit it or not, they did not intend to lose that match. One could therefore say that they had pit in their very best in that occasion. Unfortunately, their best wasn’t good enough. This is what Siasia should have called them in the locker room to say. Coming out in the public to deplore their performance would rather work a negative effect on them.
