As part of his effort to alleviate poverty in the State, a Lagos lawmaker representing Eti-Osa constituency 02 in the Lagos State House of Assembly, Hon. Gbolahan Yishawu has empowered 97 widows and aged people, including students and artisans.

He gave out the gift items and cash prizes during the 4th constituency stakeholders’ meeting held at Eti-Osa in Ikoyi, Victoria Island, Lagos.

Speaking on why he delighted in empowering his constituents, Hon, Gbolahan maintained it is important to teach people how to fish instead of giving them fish, saying it is important to assist those that are already into one business or the other in order to provide more service to the people.

According to him, if the businesses grow they will be able to employ people, which in essence we are eradicating poverty.

He therefore advised the beneficiaries to make use of the tools and equipments given to them, urged them not to sell them. “We don’t just empower people, we find out what there are needs are before giving them tools”, he said.

Part of the gifts presented to the people include: set of dyers, sewing machines, food items, brand new tyres, pumping machines, camera, gas cookers, life jackets amongst others.

The beneficiaries while reacting appreciated Hon. Gbolahan for his kind gesture, saying it is a yearly programme that all and sundry benefits from since 2010.

One of the beneficiaries, Oguntade Ajayi , who received generator and clipper said she was happy because the lawmaker has relieved her parent from spending money. I have a barbing salon and Hon. Yishawu has provided me the necessary equipments that will assist my business”, she said.

One of leaders at Obalende, Mr. Soji Ladejobi in his response said he attends the programme every year, saying this year is the best of them all, in fact I was surprised with the gifts given out to the people because he has spent a lot.

“I believe the empowerment will alleviate poverty among our people because I know of some people that are dire need of the equipments given to them. He has also gotten employment for some people. He has actually represented us well and done a lot”, he added.

The best students in the vocational training organized by the lawmaker were also empowered with equipments that will be useful for their businesses. He also donated machines for vocational training centre at his constituency.
