Superstition: Benue Community Kills Man For Killing Son & Family With Supernatural Powers

Reports from Konshisha Local Government Area of Benue State, North Central Nigeria indicate that two individuals were buried alive for allegedly being behind the lightning believed to have killed one Henry Ihwakaa, his wife, and a two-week-old child. The incident was said to have occurred after the youths in the community accused Ihwakaa, who is said to be the father of Henry, of targeting people in the area with lightning strikes every time it rained.

The community youths reportedly mobilized and attacked Ihwakaa and his alleged collaborator, dug a shallow grave, and buried them alive. According to an eyewitness, who is one of the elders in the community, Engr. Baba Agan, the matter was reported to the police in the Konshisha local government area, following which the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) mobilized his personnel to the scene of the incident. However, the two persons buried alive had died by the time their bodies were exhumed.

The spokesperson for the Benue State police command, SP Sewuese Anene, confirmed the incident, saying that two suspects had been arrested in connection with the crime, and an investigation into the matter is ongoing.

The incident has sparked widespread outrage and condemnation, with many Nigerians taking to social media to express their shock and disbelief at the barbaric act. Some have called for the perpetrators to be brought to justice and for measures to be taken to prevent such incidents from happening again in the future.

It is disheartening to hear of such primitive and inhumane actions being taken in the name of superstition and belief in supernatural powers. The need for proper education and enlightenment on the dangers of superstition cannot be overemphasized. It is important for communities to understand that lightning is a natural phenomenon that can occur at any time and cannot be controlled by human beings. The tragic incident is a wake-up call for everyone to work towards building a society that values human life and human dignity.
