Oct 17, 2015 – Missing N108Billion Akwa Ibom Fund: Akpabio Arrested By The EFCC

A citizen’s petition, not an investigation by the EFCC was the reason the agency invited Senate minority leader and former governor of Akwa Ibom State, Godswill Akpabio to its office Friday.
The citizen, Leo Ekpenyong, an Abuja based lawyer accused Akpabio of stealing N108.1billion of Akwa Ibom funds.

In the petition dated June 22, 2015, Mr. Ekpenyong had stated that between January and December 2014, the ex-governor colluded with two of his personal aides to steal a huge sum of N108.1 billion from the state’s treasury.

According to him, “Between January –December 2014, it is on record that the trio of Godswill Akpabio, Mr. Etekamba Umoren and Mr. Udo Isobara, made illegal but substantial withdrawals of cash from a designated state government-owned account with Zenith Bank with account number: 1010375881 amounting to N22.1 billion”.

“It is worthy of note that reasons for such ungodly cash withdrawals against financial regulations and due process laws range between sundry use and unjustifiable expenditures by Akpabio and his numerous surrogates and proxies.

“For example, a whopping N18 billion was withdrawn fraudulently from the state FAAC account with the United Bank for Africa in tranches of N10 million and above by Mr. Isobara in a surreptitious manner to conceal their dishonest intention.”

In the period under review, the petitioner added that the ex-governor also withdrew a huge sum of N18 billion from the state account under the guise of special services, reception of very important guests and sundry items.

“The cumulative aggregate of these monies stolen by Akpabio from the coffers of government as pocket money is the annual budget of some states in Nigeria put together.”
Among the properties, which the petitioner claimed the ex-governor acquired through proxies include, a multi-billion naira mansion at Plot 5 Ikogosi Spring Close, off Katsina-Ala Crescent, Maitama-Abuja; a multi-billion naira maisonette at Plot 28 Colorado Close, Maitama, Abuja and another multi-billion naira mansion at 22 Probyn Road, Ikoyi, Lagos.

Others include a multi-billion naira property at Plot 23 Olusegun Aina Street, Parkview, Lagos; a multi-billion naira 25 storey building and others in Lagos.Former Governor of Akwa Ibom State and incumbent Senate Minority Leader, Godswill Akpabio, was on Friday quizzed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over allegations of financial impropriety levelled against him.

EFCC operatives stormed Akpabio’s Abuja residence Friday evening to invite him to their office. Akpabio, accompanied by a few aides and a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, SAN, Ricky Tarfa followed the EFCC men and arrived at the office at about 5:20pm.

The interrogation ended at 11:00 pm.

  1. Whenever something awful like this happen, it is not a surprise to find some indigenous citizens of that state defending this man despite the fact that he has single handedly ruined their future. People of Akwa Ibom may not feel the impact of this wasteful spending now but future generation will have to carry that burden. The question is, why these people in the leadership position are treating their fellow country men like waste?. At the end of the whole saga they will realize that they don’t really need all these money. Some countries have no resources that we have yet they are surviving because they have better initiatives. Instead of spending money on unnecessary bulletproof Van, why cant you come up with a program like Social Security for senior citizen just as they have in united States. These money can also be channeled towards health care of nursing mother and provide free health care to children under 10 years. Our attitude toward money makes other people around the world look at us like a moron and still compare us with animal in 21st century.

  2. 108billion.let’s just say his corrupt aides would have their own share of the loot, maybe like 30billion(15 billion each)
Then we are left with 70.8billion to the Lion himself.
Abegi make we hear word, efcc my foot.
    Fucking bastards.
We are cursed,at the long run,he would bribe efcc with let’s say 3billion,then the case would be forgotten.

    Abegi efcc my foot.

  3. The petition was written by a lawyer not yet an investigation carried out by E F C C.The question is why did it take E F C C about 5 months to invite the former Gov. Of akwaibom There are petitions against the former Governor of river state,The E F C C has not don any thing, rather the fed Gov nominated Rotomi Amachi for screening for ministerial position.Believe it or not the arrest of the former Gov of Akwa Ibom was not far from the roll in the screening of Rotomi Amachi .i am not of the opinion that the allegation is a total false but has not been established and why now?The writer only said the money withdrawn for special people but did not say how the money was spent.the Mansions mentioned, Any of the Governors both In A P C and P D P who among them did not acquire mansions here and there that one should come and first cast stone on Akpabio.Watch the dramatic end of this case. Answer to the comments of one of the writers, I am not from any of the states in the south south.

  4. I totally agree with Jilo and Ihateallofyou (the name tho)Nigerians don’t know the right place and people to channel their anger to. All these criminals in the name of politicians should be rounded up and shot, all their looted properties seized. It’s so sad we all standby and watch these masters in the act of stealing go about freely. It can only happen in Nigeria. This country needs a revolution to sanitize the system else we are doomed. Seriously! Akwa Ibom people saw for once what they have never seen before and so were carried away, praising their beloved governor not knowing their beloved governor is having a field day with their money because he understands his people well. Pity!
