A robber Thursday evening shot dead a police sergeant in front of an auto mart around the Ikeja area of Lagos, Southwest Nigeria.
A stray bullet also hit a pay phone operator named Ibukun in the arm.
Eyewitness said Sergeant John Oroale, serving at MAN Centre, Wemabod Estate, Ikeja, who was dressed in mufti, was about to buy a vehicle at the car mart at Makinde Street, Alausa, Ikeja, when the robber shot him.
The policeman was said to have been trailed by a gang of robbers to the scene where he was shot and his money carted away.
The policeman was reported to have been shot three times while the fourth attempt accidentally hit the pay phone operator in the arm.
The State Police Command Public Relations Officer, Joseph Jaiyeola confirmed the incident but said he could not tell how much the robbers snatched from him
Meanwhile, another account has it that one of the robbers operating on another motorcycle was shot by the police when he refused to stop at Radio junction and a gun was found on him after he was searched. He was later taken to the accident And Trauma centre at the old Toll Gate near 7-Up.
