BSc In Law Testimony: Paul Enenche Apologises After Insulting Church Member ,Vera Anyim At The Dunamis Church
Vera Anyim, once the subject of a controversial incident at Dunamis International Gospel Centre in Abuja, has spoken out, claiming she holds no resentment towards the church or its leaders.
This declaration comes after a rather heated episode during a service led by the church’s Senior Pastor, Dr. Paul Enenche. A video circulating online shows Anyim sharing her academic journey, stating she earned a “BSc in Law” from the National Open University of Nigeria. Mid-testimony, Enenche interrupted, accusing her of fabricating her statement and challenging the authenticity of her credentials. He promptly asked her to step down from the pulpit, sparking a vigorous online debate and calls for an apology from the pastor.
Despite the turmoil, Anyim expressed on Facebook that she has moved past the incident after a heartfelt meeting with Enenche and his wife, Becky. She shared photos from their meeting, emphasizing her ongoing dedication to the church and her faith. “I don’t have any grudge against the church or them. I remain committed to serving God as a member of Dunamis Church,” she wrote, urging others to seek peace and move forward as well.
In response to the uproar, the church issued a statement clarifying the events that unfolded during Anyim’s testimony at their Glory Dome on April 14, 2024. The church pointed out her apparent struggle with English, which they felt didn’t align with the linguistic capabilities expected of a law graduate. They also noted inconsistencies in the duration and specifics of her academic pursuit, which raised doubts about her qualifications.
The statement revealed the church’s stringent standards for excellence and integrity, which motivated Enenche’s decision to halt Anyim’s testimony. “These were the immediate triggers for the said scenario: First, listening to the testifier’s expressions as it borders on basic spoken English, conveys the impression that the minimum standard expectation of a graduate, especially a graduate of Law was not met,” the church explained.
The church later confirmed that Anyim did graduate, although the misunderstanding had already caused significant distress. “Embarrassing the testifier publicly with the attendant media frenzy was never intended; whatever happened was under the spur of the moment,” the church added, acknowledging the unintended consequences of their actions.
Further clarification came with Anyim’s own reflection on her educational journey. In another Facebook post, she detailed graduating with a Third Class degree and the challenges of not meeting the typical eloquence expected of a lawyer. “It’s disheartened because I couldn’t speak English like lawyers. I was labelled a liar for mistakenly saying B.Sc instead of LLB. Actually, I graduated with a Third Class at NOUN. The rejected stone can become the cornerstone. We’re reminded not to look down on anyone,” she shared.
The church reaffirmed their commitment to Anyim’s welfare, both spiritually and physically, regretting the public ordeal she endured. “As a commission, we regret every inconvenience, hurt, and embarrassment this unfortunate scenario has caused to Ms. Anyim Veronica Nnenna. We remain committed to her physical welfare as well as her spiritual growth. God bless us all,” the statement concluded.
Photos on Anyim’s Facebook page later surfaced, confirming her graduation from NOUN, which provided some vindication amid the widespread discussion of her academic and linguistic abilities.
Anyim’s ordeal and subsequent reconciliation with her church leaders underline the complexities of public testimonies and the expectations placed on individuals in spiritual communities. Her experience serves as a reminder of the power of forgiveness and the importance of understanding in overcoming miscommunications and maintaining community harmony.
