August 17, 2017 – Police Teargassed IPOB Members, Burn Down Biafran Flags, Caps & Tshirts As Nnamdi Kanu Is Chased Out Of Ekwulobia Anambra State
IPOB Leader Nnamdi Kanu’s scheduled visit to Ekwulobia in Aguata LGA of Anambra State on Wednesday caused tension across the state.
As early as 8 a.m, security operatives, including soldiers, the Navy, police and others, stormed Ekwulobia in 14 trucks.
Despite the heavy security presence, IPOB members paraded the area, singing and chanting Biafran songs.
The Biafran flags, caps, shirts and other items on sale by youths were seized and burnt by the security operatives.
The situation, an eyewitness said, angered the IPOB members, who attempted to attack the security operatives.
But the security agents used tear gas to disperse the crowd.
It was learnt that one person was feared dead.
But Police spokesperson Princess Nkeiruka Nwode, an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), denied the alleged death of any IPOB member.
But she said there was presence of security to avoid breach of peace.
Nwode said: “There was nothing like that (death). The presence of the security men was to secure the place from people being attacked by hoodlums.
“People should not take the laws into their hands. The security operatives in Anambra are working day and night to secure the environment. They are not ready to allow miscreants to take over the society.
