Some suspected cultists over the weekend invaded the village of Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, and set a man and his wife ablaze. This came as suspected cult members killed a 20-year-old man, Friday Okoh, in the North Bank area of Makurdi, the state capital.
The state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Moses Yamu, confirmed the separate incidents. He said a man and his wife were killed at Agasha area of Guma Local Government Area, while the young man, Okoh, was killed by suspected cult members.
Yamu said in the incident at Agasha, a suburb of Makurdi metropolis, the gunmen set the couple and their home ablaze.The PPRO said the police recovered empty shells of rifle bullets at the scene.
He explained that the motive of the gunmen could not be immediately ascertained. Yamu, however, said the 20-year-old man, Okoh, had been on the wanted list of police on suspicion of cultism.
According to him, it was Okoh’s father who reported to the police that some young men armed with dangerous weapons stormed his residence in North Bank at 2pm on Saturday and shot his son dead.
The PPRO said investigations into the incidents had commenced in earnest. He promised that very soon the police would unravel the killers of the couple and the 20-year-old man.

Cultists have become agents of terror raking lots of havoc and destruction especially in Benue,Rivers and Bayelsa states, without the government doing much to curtail their excesses. If something is not done urgently now it might be difficult to stop them in future.
