Fatal Accident: Truck Kills Roadside Egg Seller On Otedola Bridge
A tragic incident has unfolded in Lagos State, where a female hawker, whose identity remains unknown, was fatally struck by a diesel tanker fully loaded with approximately 60,000 litres of fuel. This incident occurred on the Otedola Bridge, in the direction of the Berger area of Lagos State.
A prominent news outlet, provided an initial account of the incident, revealing that the tanker, bearing the license plate GME 483XD, did not stop at causing the demise of the pedestrian hawker. In a destructive rampage due to brake failure, it also collided with three other vehicles that were moving on the same route.
Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), validated the accounts of this unfortunate event, which transpired on a Saturday. He provided a detailed account of the events leading up to the accident, highlighting the cause as a brake failure in the fully-loaded tanker while it was in motion.
He said, “Upon arrival at the site of the incident, it was found that a tanker loaded to capacity with diesel had struck down a female pedestrian, who was a hawker, on the Otedola Bridge, heading towards Berger.” He detailed that the tanker, faced with a mechanical issue causing brake failure, was responsible for the woman’s tragic end.
Further investigation conducted by the LASEMA Response Team unveiled more about the harrowing sequence of events. The tanker, suffering a brake failure, veered uncontrollably into oncoming traffic. This unexpected detour led to it colliding with a Suzuki, a Toyota Camry, and an Avalon, causing significant damage to all three vehicles.
In an unfortunate turn of events, a separate but equally tragic incident occurred on the same day. Another pedestrian, who also remains unidentified, met a fatal end in an accident on Odo Iya Alaro before New Garage, heading towards Ojota.
This event was made public by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) via a tweet posted on its official Twitter account. The message detailed the accident involving a Ford Jeep and a truck, which resulted in a fatality. Local law enforcement officers from the Ogudu Police Station were already present at the site of the incident.
The tweet also noted that the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit had been informed to attend to the tragic scene for the necessary removal of the lifeless body. A word of caution was relayed to the public through this tweet, advising drivers to exercise caution while approaching the accident scene.
The weekend’s events cast a dark shadow over the city of Lagos as two fatal accidents claimed the lives of a female hawker and an unidentified pedestrian. While both incidents are under investigation, they serve as grim reminders of the need for regular vehicle maintenance, adherence to traffic rules, and respect for pedestrian safety.
