Nov 21, 2012 – Inspector Innocent Ngam’ Murder: Lagos Police Accused Of Dumping Slain Officer In Mortuary
Family members of the slain Innocent Ngam, a police Inspector attached to Ejigbo Divisional Headquarters, Lagos State southwest Nigeria, have condemned the Lagos State Police Command for dumping him on mortuary floor and refusing to pay for his embalmment.
Inspector Ngam was shot dead on Sunday, 11 November, 2012 by armed bandits while responding to a distress call.
The late Ngam lost his wife in 2002 and left behind five male children, Chibuzor who was born in 1993, Chima, Emmanuel, Overcomer and Chidiebere.
The younger brother and son to the deceased Inspector Chinedu and Chibuzor, brother and son, respectively told P.M.NEWS “We were shocked when we saw him in police uniform on the floor of the Isolo General Hospital mortuary with his body swollen. The police refused to pay for his embalmment until we came from Port-Harcourt.
This is disgraceful to the Nigeria Police Force. “When we met the mortuary attendants, they requested for N4,000 which we gave them and they began work on him. We promised to give them more money so as to prevent his body from decomposing.
“He was shot in the leg and he bled to death while being rushed to Ikeja General Hospital,” they said.
When P.M.News visited Isolo General Hospital, one of the mortuary attendants, who did not want his published said “it is the habit of these policemen to dump people in the mortuary without making efforts on how to do the embalmment.
“I think this is not fair to a gallant policeman who died in a gun duel with robbers as such attitude could discourage other policemen from responding to distress calls.”
When P.M.News called the Lagos State police image maker, DSP Ngozi C. Braide, she promised to call back, saying the network was bad but she never called back or picked subsequent calls.(Credit: PM)
